Serendipitous Counterstamp Purchase

tokenprotokenpro Posts: 893 ✭✭✭✭✭

I bought this counterstamp out of a folder of low priced coins & tokens at the last Long Beach show. The c/s had a date and was only a few dollars so I just added it to a small pile of other items knowing I could make a few dollars more on it. I just got around to working on that lot and finally noticed something (duh!) that makes this a keeper even though it is copper (I collect c/s on silver):

    Great find!

I wonder if PCGS will slab it.

Does it have a Brunk number?

Except in rare instances Brunk does not list individual punch c/s, only logotypes. There is no reason I see to slab the piece and I doubt the two majors would do it anyway. Did you pick up on the significance?

It's when Lincoln passed away. He was shot / assassinated the day before.

Right on -- crude but effective, no question of the age, on a correct coin & complete with original soil -- my favorite (and possibly least expensive) purchase at the Beach.

@tokenpro.... It may be my eyes, but those letters/numbers appear raised... Is it just a 'visual' thing? Cheers, RickO

It's the years of dirt in the counterstamped numerals & letters that create that perception illusion in the image.

Looks like the host coin has a nice repunched date as well. Lots to like about that one.

Incomplete planchets wanted, especially Lincoln Cents & type coins.

It always amazes me that items such as these (errors & counter stamps) show as much circulation as they do. I would think someone would have removed it from circulation and saved it much earlier.

I like it! Glad you rescued it from a jumble of stuff. Abe's demise has been memorialized in so many ways. Peace Roy
