I think I see very minor split serifs (not significant enough to warrant RPM designation) but I agree with the die chip consensus.

Me thinks it's the elusive rare/unique S over sideways S over CC over D. >:)

It looks like die chips in the lower portion... and discoloration in the upper section of the S....Cheers, RickO

I bought it because it's a nice 06-S which is a better date.

What I am seeing inside the lower S does not appear to match any part of an underlying S.

Could it be an S/D ?
I looked above and below the left curve of the S and see no indication
of the vertical imprint of a D. So i would think, as has been said that it is just an
artifact or chip in the lower loop of the S.
This is seen often on 50's era S mint Lincoln's.

Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

Thanks for your input. I tend to agree and will use this nice Dime as a regular 06-S.

As a side-note DIMEMAN, when I saw your coin it reminded me of a 1950D I found in an OBR about 20 years ago.
I was trying to grasp what I was seeing and I ended up sending the coin to one of the coin guru's to look at.
It was returned to me with the note that it was just die marks/gouges and nothing else.
Well about 5 years later I saw an image of this same coin by the same person listed as a new RPM.
Just goes to show you that guys like us have to look and we have to be persistent when we get that gut feeling :)

That 50-D cent looks more like a RPM than my coin by a lot. I think the guru messed up there.

I just went to close the folder DIMEMAN and noticed the next file pic I had was a 50S with very similar marks to your 06 S.
I had determined mine to be artifacts also just like yours :)

The next pics were a 51 S that is a true RPM.
Good examples for any newbies looking at this thread as both you and I could spot the differences easily but newbies could learn from this.
    Real RPM
