Slag Planchet Impurity error. Nice one too, especially being on gold. They typically impair eye appeal and lower the value, especially with morgans, but this one is a doozy.

I’m far from an expert in coins, but I am a forensic scientist and it looks like a roller-like apparatus left a linear mark and subsequent deposits on the planchet which were then struck through, explaining the presence of said deposits into low areas. Would love to put it under my stereo microscope.
Nailed it! I'm posting some other images of this characteristic soon.

Absolutely! Gold errors are cool. I have one, the 1891 quarter eagle DDR.
That would be a variety, not an error, wouldn't it?
Oh yes a variety. My mistake. Still learning a lot of it all. Thanks

More of the same characteristic on silver quarter:
Well, lookie what I just found - 1913 $2 1/2 w/planchet flaw:
Wow! Exact same look! Who's coin is that? If it is for sale I wouldn't mind owning it.
I made it in high school shop class! Just kidding. Now, maybe we can all agree it was caused by a defect in the strip.
FLAW error FLAW error FLAW ...... rare cartwheel mark
It is just so unique @jwitten
Found another one today! This makes three known ones with almost identical looking error marks.
