A Bad Abe Lincoln CWT Copy

That is bad. And disturbing, as one does not think of CWTs as particularly enticing targets of the counterfeiters. But as popularity and prices climb, so do greed and ingenuity in making a dishonest buck.

I hope I don't disillusion anyone but....They have been counterfeiting Civil War items for decades if not longer. Attach a magazine article, a soldier's military record (readily available from NPS), find a photo and you're on your way to big money. And don't forget to include a battle. Gettysburg is always a money maker. If I had every bullet sold on EBay as being "dug on the Gettysburg battlefield" I could build a single lane highway from Harrisburg to Philadelphia. If you buy a CW item buy from a reputable, long term, dealer in Civil War artifacts. If it's a high price item make sure you have provenance with it. So an item like this doesn't surprise me.

I attended the 1957 Boy Scout National Jamboree at Valley Forge, PA. During set up of tents and campsite, two musket balls were found by scouts in my group (not me, darn it). It was a great experience for a young lad. Cheers, RickO
