This is an in-hand picture of the coin that just arrived:

This is a somewhat mysterious but IMO beautiful coin that was struck as an anniversary coin. It is supposed to be a "currency" specimen, but has some very prooflike character to it. The face value was far less than bullion even in 1982, so would be an NCLT.

Mintage is actually unknown, but this is only the second specimen to show in 10 years and I don't recall any for sale prior to that. Reputedly there were 32 essai specimens struck but I have never seen one of those.

This is the same design as the larger silver crown that is often seen in dealer showcases (there was an earlier similar design 1972 crown). Both 1972 and 1982 come as silver "essai" versions, and then a 1982 gold "essai" version of the silver coin was struck (roughly triple the weight of the present coin) to the extent of 12 specimens.

Apparent scratches are on the ATS slab. GTG if you want, but it doesn't really matter.

Yes, this is the gold "currency" version. I really liked the silver versions when I first saw them and have been luck enough to get the larger essai in gold as well as this one.

    Cool!

I really like those high denomination African coins and this one has common design elements and spells out the countries involved. It should have a solid demand in the future.
