Most fake double eagles are made of gold meeting U S Mint specifications. Are you referring to the ASG monogram below the date? That's the initials of the designer Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

  • Yes the ASG . How do I know if it is a S variety?

Not an S would be above the date.

    which machine? Sigma?

Very common date $20 gold. Doubt anyone would fake it when they could just as easily counterfeit a rare $20 gold.

Nice coin for not knowing what you got. Usually it's someone with a 1877 indian cent the size of a cup coaster telling you you're crazy when you tell them it's not worth the thousands they figure it's worth because they looked it up in a book.
BTW I didn't make that up. It happened to me a long time ago when I worked in a shop.

The coin appears silver in your picture.... I assume that is the lighting? Your edge picture is gold, that is why I ask about lighting...Cheers, RickO

  • Yes poor lighting
