I used to practically live in card shops when I was younger, but now there's only one card shop left in the city I live in, and it isn't even a good shop. It is quite sad. Now I'm forced to hang out at Taco Bell.
Actually that's what I've heard - collectors being forced to hang out at Taco Bells. Now if you walk into a Taco Bell you see weird guys just walking around like zombies asking random people if they see any unopened packs laying around.
I usually hang out by the drink fountain, and wait until the employees aren't looking and steal napkins. You can never have too many napkins.
One problem is that when you send cards to someone who advertises constantly about taking consignments, but holds your cards hostage for going on 4 months because they are to cheap to list (In his view not mine), but won't send them back to you is a huge problem.
The spread between factory cost and retail selling price for current year products. Example 2019 Bowman hobby boxes: cost $73.61, retail $175. 2019 Bowman HTA Jumbos cost $133.58 retail $385. 2019 Topps Chrome cost $61.34 Retail $99.
Basketball Panini Contenders cost $78.16 retail $196, National Treasures cost $386, retail $1155, Prizm cost $93, retail $299. I fully support making a profit and I understand that not all products are "winners" and many product lines drop off below cost within a few weeks of release, but for me the spread is too high. I also understand that retail markup needs to be significant to pay rent, employees and keep the lights on. The "solution" from manufacturers was to pump out mass retail configurations like blaster boxes, hanger packs, gravity feed loose packs, retail boxes, mega boxes. Also, Topps for example will sometimes require wholesalers and distributors and hobby shops to take product that the retailer can't sell such as Star Wars, Teenage Ninja Turtles, Wacky Packages, Sticker boxes, movie-themed product etc. I see that hobby shops don't have a choice but to sell hot products for a larger margin, because 1) they have to make up for the "looser" products, 2) because they can since people are willing to pay those prices and 3) the content for hobby product is different from retail content (most often not always)
With the proliferation of mass retail configurations of product, it is appealing to budget conscious consumers, those hobbyists re-entering the hobby, it also satisfies the itch to open some packs for cheap, and I think importantly it allows someone to get some Bowman, Heritage, Chrome etc. without completely missing out because they can't/won't pay for a hobby box. I also think its good to have options for kids to buy packs affordably and for dads and moms to get kids interested in the hobby too.
Basically I'm the guy that complains about the price of movie tickets, but I still go 3 times a month and get the $8 popcorn.

Yep..when I was 12-13 years old, every Tuesday night, my father and I would go to our favorite card shop in the area and the owner would treat us to pizza and soda while we looked through his 5000 count boxes of Topps baseball commons - misc years - trying to build nice raw binder sets. We would get there, eat, talk about the hobby, and then would usually find myself lost in his commons boxes for hours. The stars would be in the showcase lol. At the time, It was mostly just early 80’s baseball I was working on. I still have them. The transparency/building relationships like that seems to be long gone.
Pretty sure I've seen some of those cards you went thru but passed on out there for sale. They have little pepperoni grease fingerprints on them!

Still no luck? Not cool. He held my cards almost 3 months, but eventually listed them saying my package was “lost”. I know @JoeBanzai on here also had a similar experience, but his cards were never recovered. This has got to stop, and I know you live nowhere near NJ so what is one to do? Why would you think that? I would only expect: scan it, list it, ship it, take your cut, and send proceeds to whoever consigned it. Anything more is above and beyond.
Forget the trimmed example; let's just say it was a fake card. Selling fake cards for 5 figures is ok and no responsibility falls on the consignor or auction house? I don't think that is above and beyond. Yes, you could offer the ebay return policy, but as a business, it can't be good for your reputation. Guess we will have to agree to disagree a little on this. I think the auction amount entails a little bit more research than say a $100 item.
Is anyone else concerned about the fact that someone paid 25k for a Mahomes rc?

The market will yield what it yields for prices ....if it were a legit PSA 10 at 25k ...I don't have a problem ( Though I'm certainly not touching it.) .... the obvious issue is the trimming and of course most hobbyists likely have a problem.
No, I'm talking about people trying to invest early on talented, & untried, young players & paying astronomical prices for their rc's.
I'd would love to be able to go back & buy up all of the '84 Star (MJ's TRC) & '86 Fleer cases & packs so I could have them today. But people are very quick to pull the trigger on any up-and-coming player & throw all this money into them. Especially the people who are doing it strictly as an investment. They throw all their money behind the hype. Young players like Luka Doncic, Ben Simmons, & Donovan Mitchell are all very talented but I'd never pay that kind of money for any of their cards. As of now I don't see any NBA player to throw that kind of investment money into.

Pretty obvious trimming and alterations are the biggest issue right now. 10 plus large dealers identified with many more to come. Don’t want to get this thread killed and not pointing any fingers at anyone other then the crooks altering cards. But there is no issue that even comes close imo.

Not concerned. Not surprised either. It’s someone else’s money.
There is another thread about biggest price drops and price increases. This card certainly is a candidate for that thread in a few years.
Yea, I was kind of kidding. This buyer must reaalllyy like Mahomes or know him personally or something.

The 3 best places in the world to go as a kid was Toys R Us, the arcade, & comic/card shops.
I still like to go into card shops but when I do they're desolate & kind of depressing. They're dying off & I don't see them making a comeback.
So true! Except toys r us it was white castle. 6 burgers for 2 bucks was great for a kid with a limited budget. At the arcade, I could make a quarter last forever playing Mrs. Pac-Man or Gauntlet with my friends, Lastly, Mike's Comic Hut was my mecca. One side of the store cards the other comics. I could spend hours digging through card boxes, sorting the 25 cent bin of comics and talking sports with the owner. It was a much better time then.

Here's the REAL issue, too much money being spent on cards brings in the crooks who then screw the foolish/uninformed.
A few years ago I wanted to buy a Byron Buxton rookie when the Twins drafted him #1 overall. The "good" rookies were all super limited autograph cards that were going for 2-3 THOUSAND dollars! Seeing how he is looking like he is made of glass, I'm glad I didn't spend that kind of $ for a baseball card of an unproven player.
Do I feel sorry for those who did...................not one bit.
Hopefully with all the "problems" with this hobby, many of the "investors" will move on to something else and the "card guys" will get this imperfect hobby back.
Enjoy collecting!

Tape. I agree. I've had problems with it for years. I stared at one of my cards for weeks trying to figure out how to get the tape off of it without damaging it. I finally had to call the cops on the tape. I pressed charges on it for harassment.

The biggest issue facing the hobby is the people who still call it a hobby. It’s a business. And it’s a unique business at that: it requires no formal education, no licensing, has no regulations, no governing body, and is generally not policed. What could ever go wrong?
I used to think I was only in involved as a hobbyist, but I realized as soon as I logged into eBay or sent a card in for grading or attended a card show, I was neck-deep in the muck whether I wanted to be or not.
You're a lucky man. My wife is the complete opposite. She gripes about me buying cards. If I'm expecting a card to arrive in the mailbox, I have to sneak to go get it. It's like a Navy Seal operation just to get a card out of the mailbox. I even thought about putting on camouflage that matches the walls of our living room, so my wife won't see me pass by.
Why am I still seeing cards kept in those 9-card plastic albums? Not just worthless base cards but cards worth thousands or even tens of thousands. I used to keep my cards in those as a kid but quickly learned they're the worst thing in the world if you actually care about them & their condition.

It's still a hobby for me. It just requires a business sense of mind. Per the old adage, If it were business, it wouldn't be personal, right?
