About 50% of the c/s on non-silver U.S. coins that come through me are not listed in Brunk so no listing is not that meaningful by itself. With an initialed name, M.N. Rowley, and a later date for counterstamps a census search should turn up a number of possibilities as the post-1880 census data is very useful. Nailing the c/s down to a specific location / individual would take additional information & possibly iscovery of more examples.
An additional note & possibly an invitation for help: Dr. Brunk has kept compiling information and updates on counterstamps and is very interested in publishing a second edition of his detailed c/s catalog. Unfortunately his previous publisher, Rich Hartzog of World Exonumia Press, passed away two years ago so that route is closed. The last info that I have is that Greg Brunk is still looking for a publisher but several possibly former avenues (CSNS, TAMS) are not available at present. Just something to keep in mind...
Found these classified ads from 1883, Detroit....................could be the culprit ?
