VDB Coins Dalton Show Report

I guess everybody has different experiences at a show like BRNA. It often ends up on the calendar right after a major show like ANA, but I can personally think of dealers who came from Massachusetts, Ohio, Colorado, and Nevada to be here, so the organizers clearly are doing something right. It is true that like many shows, your profit or loss can be made on Thursday with the Early Birds and the dealer--to-dealer buying and selling. Friday is also good for retail business, as the serious collectors I think take the day off and come to the show. Saturday is a lot of tire-kicking, but we nonetheless made a few excellent sales toward the end of that day as well.
This year we had a lot of new Indian cents and Lincoln cents that we had bought right, and some Flying Eagles as well that flew away ... We sold some nice type, and a couple of gold coins. We saw a lot of familiar faces and made some new friends and new customers ... all in all, we had an excellent show and probably sold more than we had in several years, since gold and silver were so high (what was that, 2011?).
Only had one moment of ugliness from another dealer, young guy, who while handing me a coin said roughly, "Hold it over the case, I don't want you to drop it on the floor and break the slab." Dude, I am old(er) than you but not yet either feeble or senile. It doesn't sound bad to read it back (and the floors are concrete), but his tone was quite insulting. I handed him back the coin, bit my tongue (surprise!), and moved on. I noticed he was also quite rude to the older gentleman at the next table over.
Old elephants never forget.
Back to the market activity, I thought the collectors were really interested, interesting, and they were buying as well. Our bread-and-butter market of Beautifully Toned Coins did quite well. If the color was right and the price was right, they found delighted new owners. It seemed like there were more vestpocket dealers coming by this year than ever before, and some of them had great inventory priced right, so we bought quite a few nice goodies to put on our new website which we hope to launch in a week or so. And @ricko some of them you would approve of!
I had an interesting discussion with @amwldcoin about Barber halves, and I have to say I see some of the same tendencies in the Lincoln cent market (but I think there is a far larger collector base for Lincolns). We did buy one nicely toned AU55 from him (for slightly over PCGS Guide).
We couldn't keep any silver bars in stock. We had quite a few 10-oz bars of different varieties, and every one of them sold before Saturday ended. It was all over but the crying by about 2 p.m. Saturday; we never stay on Sunday since we have a good drive ahead of us. I was really amazed at one thing: We have never been major dealers in Morgan dollars, as we just think it is too crowded a field. Nonetheless, we do have a selection of better-date (only) Morgans, both toned and brilliant.
No one even asked to see a single Morgan dollar. Not the whole weekend. What's up with that?
I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn which is a really nice hotel just down the road from the Convention Center, excellent overall.
Tom @snizzle I am sorry I did not get a chance to even talk with you, I was so busy when y'all came up. I saw all my usual buds from Knoxville and Chattanooga, and that was most enjoyable.
And thus endeth my tale.
Kind regards,
George

Thanks for the very informative report.
No problem George
I would rather see you busy making money than just talking about it$ with me.
Tom
Cool report
Glad to hear that you had a great show!
Hate that I missed being able to spend some time with you my friend, but really happy to hear you did well. Because I didn't look at much in the way of Morgans last time around, there were a few on my wantlist....I'm sure I would have asked about some!
Thank you for this report. Really excited to see the new "vdbcoins.com" as well!

Thanks for the info. Dalton is in Georgia.
The pardon is for tyrants. They like to declare pardons on holidays, such as the birthday of the dictator, or Christ, or the Revolution. Dictators should be encouraged to keep it up. And we should be encouraged to remember that the promiscuous dispensation of clemency is not a sign of political liberality. It is instead one of those valuable, identifying marks of tyranny.

Very enjoyable read.
@amwldcoin I enjoyed our chat as well and the bit of business. Very nice! @Hallco well, absence makes the heart grow fonder, so the bard says ... or somebody. The Morgan dollars are now underwater according to CDN. Think I'm gonna give nice CC's away? Don't think so!
PS Regarding the Hilton Garden Inn. I forgot my nifty-zippy phone-charger-thingie where you just set the iPhone down in this cradle gizmo and it charges ... no plugs. I was really glad that I had chatted up the lovely housekeeper Silvia en español rather at length, and left her a couple of fivers for the excellent attention she gave to my room each day. She turned in the charger to the desk ... they called this morning and are sending it back gratis! I do favor Hilton hotels and they treat me right ... and I try to treat people right (although sometimes I fail in that, to be honest). Anyway. Embrace Joy!
Kind regards y'all,
George

You should've chatted with the Dollar Dealer next to me if you wanted to hear someone who is livid about CDN! I think all in all he gave me nearly an hour spiel about all that is wrong with the market today....CDN being at the top of the list!
