Wow, this was a better date for a long time, worth over $300.
I checked recent results, most are under $200. Did I miss something, did the population increase? https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1944-s-50c/6623
Of course there are outliers like this one that NGC gave a star to: https://coins.ha.com/itm/walking-liberty-half-dollars/1944-s-50c-ms65-and-9733-ngc-ngc-census-1276-203-pcgs-population-3039-652-cdn-210-whsle-bid-for-problem-free-ngc/a/131846-23507.s?ic16=ViewItem-Auction-Archive-PreviousPricesHeritage-081514

Canary. Coal mine.
CDN bid $210, MV about $275
I might start shopping around for one. Never owned one in Gem. Not something I would give away. Wonder if it would be only one in room at my next show...
See an NGC piece in auction on the bay $189
Yes Canary in the mine not doing do well.
Maybe wrong holder?
Both NGC and PCGS gems were selling under $200, generally $150-$200 the last few months. Maybe summer doldrums?
Never thought these late date Walkers were anything special unless they had a fantastic strike.

They are pretty plentiful, so I'm not surprised at the red arrows. 41-s and 42-S are a lot tougher in gem, with 43-S being the easiest of the 41-s-44-s "better date in gem" crowd.
This coin comes up on the 44-s Walker page:

Just check out the PCGS coin facts page, 44-s 50c in MS65, sold on ebay and HA for under $200 or so. So no, "wholesale" vs. retail doesn't factor in, these are auction results with all fees included, except maybe HA where you have to pay shipping as a buyer.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
That could "Walk" right over to my registry set. Just sayin'

Soft markets, Blue hairs mostly selling and no interest from the new young blood. Basic economics, supply/demand.
The whole worlds off its rocker, buy Gold™.
There are over 3000 in PCGS plastic and 1200 in NGC. Are there over 4000 Walker collectors needing one?

There USED TO BE.
It's hard to know what those populations really are with the resubmissions. I remember it was one of Scott Travers' recommended crack out plays with the big spread between 64/65 with the 44-s. And we have millions of collectors; even though there are plenty who want a short or long set of Walkers in gem, even if they can't afford them.
Pretty toning helps, but it is a common coin after all.
I have a May or June 1989 bluesheet somewhere that lists the 44-S @$3400 in PCGS MS65 & @$7000 in PCGS MS66. The grading was stricter but the money was real.
I'm sorry, I was mistaken. The 1944-S in PCGS MS66 back during the short-lived market peak in '89 wasn't $7000, it was $7700.
There are a few ways to read this:
Which seems the most likely?
I ran a bunch of late date walkers from an old collection the past 6 months, PCGS and ngc, I was surprised actually how soft they have become. its no summer doldrum
I wonder how much of this is due to collectors moving from date/mm sets to type sets, vs. general softness across the entire series.
A lot of '44'S Wlh's are softly struck-even in the higher grades, It definitly is a coin which needs to be viewed with at least a decent photo, Good strikes are tough with most of the short set S mint Walkers, and decent, well struck ones seem to be priced a lot higher than the 'normal' softly struck ones.
I had a 44-s that I sent to Mr. Nachbar for an offer with some other coins years ago, it was PCGS MS65 nice white coin. He said he would offer $70 or so that it was a 64 not a 65; so what would he sell it as?
I'm guessing grade-flation is also playing a role.
I submitted a 44S from an original roll with an above average strike back in the 90's
that came back as a 64 and I was Ok with that.....it's an easy 65 by "today's" standards,
or at least comparable to many that I see.
Maybe I will check out some WLH's... sounds like a buying opportunity Cheers, RickO
Yes summer doldrums. Bad time to sell. Good time to buy if can buy r right.
Just hold your ground and things should pickup when summer over.
Do we have millionS of collectors?
Yup summer doldrums but if your looking to buy one there are a handful of specimens going for under 200
Heres one for $180 if you are in the market

I really think collectors should consider that the has been a huge decrease in the number of "classic" collectors. Back in the day, almost everyone was collecting the main 20th century series and then maybe specializing in a couple series. I think the number of people that collect this way is WAY down.
I posted this before but I'll do it again: there may be more people collecting the ASE "silver dollar" series than the Morgan dollar series.
Ahhhh....easy peasy... Blue hairs disinherit the young blood.
Dang, now I know where the September's extra money is going, I would much rather have a full white MS66 Walker than any scrap the mint will be selling next month, unless they sell some kids set where I have to buy a bunch for the grandkids and such, beware when you get kids interested in coins it can get expensive...
