Nice large cent with an altered date of 1804...
Why must people do this. Destroyed piece of numismatic history that will forever be a damaged/filler date.

I would think the corrosion and wear destroyed this coin long before any alteration could make that claim.

It looks like a piece of charcoal. Maybe it just needed to be put out of its misery? In classic Ebay fashion, the seller has a price that corresponds to a win-the-lottery fantasy.
So, to recap, someone took a heavily corroded 1800's LC that typically sells raw on ebay for less than $50 and did a shoddy job altering it into a key date... now they're trying to get $400 for it?
Is PT Barnum selling this??

I think it is an improvement. :-(
Hey, thanks for monitoring EBay for us and finding things on that site to post over here at CU.
At least they admit to the altered date

Calling that a "nice large cent" seems a bit hyperbolic.
The listing is gone now... did anyone get a picture?.....Cheers, RickO
After seeing the photo, the title of this thread is comical.
