What a mess. Coin World reports...

U.S. Mint seeking circulating commems for 250th anniversary in 2026

Ummmm.... Lessee here... On the Semiquincentennial (Bicenquinquagenary? quartermillennial?):

To help celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026, the U.S. Mint will pursue legislation that will include a one-year redesign of the obverses and reverses of all circulating U.S. coin denominations. Ryder did not disclose what design motifs might be used for the 2026 redesign.

U.S. Mint Director David J. Ryder provided only a few details about the 2026 coins in an exclusive interview with Coin World Aug. 13 in conjunction with the American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money in Rosemont, Illinois. He did say that the 2026 redesign is the major component of a proposal for a 10-year quarter dollar program to begin in 2022, the year after the America the Beautiful Quarters Program ends.

Talking about quarters....

Ryder said four quarter dollars, issued one per year for the years 2022 through 2025, would bear reverse designs depicting animals, the top theme suggested by collectors in Mint focus groups and surveys. The 2026 coin would celebrate the 250th anniversary.

Starting in 2027, another four quarter dollars, one annually, would bear designs representing youth sports, the second top design theme suggested. A 10th quarter dollar would reflect either the animals or youth sports theme, Ryder said.

On the other hand....

The Women’s History and Nineteenth Amendment Centennial Quarter Dollar Coin Program Act, H.R. 1923, if enacted, would begin in 2021, generating 56 quarter dollars to celebrate accomplishments and contributions of an individual woman of each state, territory and the District of Columbia.

sigh...

We will probably end up with a 50th anniversary set of the bicentennial coinage with special editions in regular proof, reverse proof, satin finish, W mintmarked, colorized coins in silver, platinum, and palladium. That should make a nice Prestige Set. :D

Those are all some pretty horrible ideas.

How about just put lady liberty back on all coins above the dime with good looking eagles on the back.
Dime and less should get a good design that is reminiscent of freedom.

Stop the madness. The way the above ideas are going, we are bound to end up with quarters celebrating amusement parks at some point!

    Hey, there's an idea!

I think I'd rather see amusement parks more than an 11 year politically correct quarter series...

Anyone remember Riverview in Chicago back in the 50's and 60's? Nostalgia...

It's bad enough that people who don't collect coins find coin collecting boring. But now, to add insult to injury, the U.S. Mint seems hell bent on making coin collecting boring for coin collectors.

Considering the ugly mess produced for 1976, and the generally cartoonish stuff made since then, I'm not hopeful. Maybe the Mint can convince Heidi Wastweet to design both sides of a really nice coin....?

    Updated, in Coin World today:

Mint hopes to redesign minor circulating coinage for one-year types in 2026
This article updates the article referenced in the OP.

The 10-year quarter program legislation would kick off in 2022, which would include four years devoted to designs featuring indigenous animals voted on by children and collectors. Five quarter dollars would be designed for each of those four years. Ryder said the animal component would also include indigenous endangered species to be featured on the Kennedy half dollar reverse.

The legislation would also provide for a one-off, one-year redesign of the cent, nickle, dime, quarter and half for the Semiquincentennial in 2026. The cent, nickle and dime would then revert back to their designs in 2027.

The remaining years in the quarter series would include youth sports quarter dollar issues, bearing designs based on sports selected by young collectors. Ryder said the sports component would include a tie-in to the 2028 Olympic Games.

Some might say that ship has sailed.
