I use the Illinois 529 bright start program for my kids college savings. This email just came in from them mentioning a live auction during their state fair. I like auctions.. so I took a quick peak. It has a lot of coin/bullion/currency/baseball/etc... related stuff in it. I just thought some people here who live nearby might care to know about this.

Been to "unclaimed property" auctions by the Illinois State Treasurer on many occasions. Contents of unclaimed safe deposit boxes and similar goods turned-in after so many years by a statutory Bailee.

    Never, Never, NEVER any bargains.

The kind of auctions where a well-circulated 1965 clad dime will be bid up to $25.

    Pass.

Ugh. I would have thought some of those bullion lots would go at melt or something at least.
Or perhaps a key date coin that was raw and could be graded for a good buy.

Oh well. It was worth a shot.

Do what you wish, but I've never been to one where the auctioneer and a large part of the crowd weren't knowledgeable about values. And things still go crazy high, because some people are just nuts.
