Couldn't pass up this 1958 Double Mint Set...

I was vacationing last week with the family in the middle of Michigan and found a little coin shop in a small town we breezed through. He had a couple nice, original mint sets laying around. I asked to see them and the this one grabbed my attention and I couldn't pass it up. The quarter is just electric... one of the nicest I've seen, it reminds me of deep space photos from the hubble telescope.
I didn't bother with the Denver side, the coins are in nice shape but it's pretty average amber style toning.

How's the Philly dime? Any FB's? Worth some decent coin in 6FB and higher.

    Later, Paul.

Sounds like a perfect situation. Nice vacation. New shop. Something worth buying because it looks amazing.

    Congratulations!

I'll check & get back to you. I didn't look too close, dimes aren't my thing and its stressfull popping them out of their thin paper housing.

So my question is, would it be harmful to the quarter if it was gently set on some crinkled aluminum foil, boiling water added and a teaspoon of baking soda to change the dark patina back into silver? Just read about this little chemistry fact.

Sadly, not even close to FB. Onei s flat as a pancake, the other torch is separated nicely on the top but the bottom band is mush.

I wouldn't mess with the original surfaces of this type of set, that's the beauty of it in my opinion. Feel free to give it a try for yourself, I have no idea but would be interested in seeing your results.

It’s beauty is the originality imo.

@Namvet69 ....Years ago I did that experiment.... It worked, though the fields did display a flatness (not the bright mint finish) due to the effect of the tarnish.... Cheers, RickO

You can find full-step nickels in those also (Denver, if I remember correctly).

    oh, you were serious?

That is only good for salt warter metal detecting dimes.

I have been able to see Mercury dates that way.

I was east of Lansing, so didn't get to the Grand Rapids area much. Will note the Lowell shop for a future trip. Thanks.
