Coins "Seen on TV" part IX.... sadness

The year: 1984 (Original air date 1/7/1984)
The show: Silver Spoons
Episode: "Rick the Greak"
The coin(s): First was a "3-legged buffalo nickel"....."could be 'G' for 'good'", or, as Ricky said, "Could be 'EF' for 'extra fine'".
Second: Brand new, from the mint, red inner plastic, US PROOF SETS "never touched by human hands", said the dad all excitedly.

The sad part: Dad says "Come on, let's look at these babies. Just think, Rick, these coins have never been touched by human hands...ha hah. Now, over the years the value of these coins is gonna SKYROCKET"

That last part, as history has shown, wasn't quite accurate :(

Still nice to see different numismatic subplots or plots themselves (Hawaii 5-0 and the 1913 V Nickel, for instance, or some of the Perry Mason episodes, etc), but, sad when a speculation such as "value is gonna skyrocket" and, moving forward, it is proven WAY off (says the holder of 2 of those sets...from each year back then).

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

While that scenario has not happened to me....It has happened to people I used to work with... I have recounted a couple of those episodes here. In the past, I did buy mint proof sets though, but never with the idea the value would 'skyrocket'....Still have them though, just in case that rocket takes off.... :D Cheers, RickO

I don't look to sitcoms for investment advice.

How to make a coin value "skyrocket":

Sell it as "flown on a rocket to space".

Myself, I had to look up the term "Greak".

Urban Dictionary says a compound word meaning someone who is both a Geek AND a Freak.

Sounds like a lot of coin collectors whom I have known.

LOL..... POTD !!! If not POTY :) (and, I'm talking about your reply, Swampy  )

Btw...that "user" likes to come to my threads and make snide little comments because he knows I have him blocked. I wouldn't have seen that little snideness (as if ANYONE would try to get advice from a sitcom...) if you hadn't quoted it.....

Mr. Wilson on Dennis the Menace was a collector of coins and stamps. I recall him playing chess by mail with a friend. Things were way simpler half a century ago.
