11-D NICKEL DDO/DDR ( I ALMOST HATE TO ASK)

OK, I understood the machine doubling and the creating of the shelf look that happens by the coin being pushed out to quick.
this one does not have the same look as my previous submissions. it isn't a flat shelf look. is it still machine produced?

It's always OK to ask a sincere question....

same as before - not a doubled die.

If you can, pick up a copy of the CherryPicker's Guide to Die Varieties.

In addition to showing good sharp close ups of genuine doubled die coins,
it also has an Appendix in the back that explains doubled dies vrs. mechanical
    or ejection doubling, etc.

Look at the date in your photos - see the doubling on top of the main digits?
It's flat, and not the same height or thickness of the normal lettering. That's
called 'shelf' doubling, a nickname for ejection or mechanical doubling.

Please understand that just because a coin has doubled design elements,
    that doesn't mean it's a doubled die.

I am going with MD. Does not look as obvious as some, but still a lower level on the doubled area ("shelf-like", and look at the 2 - the doubling goes multiple ways.

Also, while there are coins that have both DDO and DDR, it is exceedingly rare to have two doubled dies on one coin ,so that is another tip off.

Man, I am getting old -when I saw "11-D" in the title I thought 1911.... :s

Last but not least, if you haven't already done so, make sure you post to this thread to get a chance to win free silver. You obviously have lots of coin photos so just pick a favorite:

  • i just know that one of you said " If I had a nickel for every time some newbie asked this question"......"I would study it for errors"

Instead of shelf think of stairs. If it looks like a stair step it is not a DDO. Your's looks like you could step right up!

It might also resemble other furniture such as a chair, an armoire, end table (or a beginning table), coat rack, maybe even a refrigerator.....Coin collecting is a diverse hobby.

I strongly agree with Fred's suggestion to get the CPG...and I see you will be getting it soon...Good, study it, and aside from the Appendix information... the pictures of errors (i.e. DDO's, DDR's) are a tremendous resource. Cheers, RickO
