Question for those attending The National who go with more than $10,000 cash

I'm aware that if you're flying into this country, you have to report any cash of $10,000 and above but how does it work when flying within the states?

Has anyone experienced an issues going through TSA?

Do they require any documentation?

I just want to make sure that I have any proper paper work so that I don't get held up too long if they require anything.

Nobody takes CC’s at the National? It’s pretty easy to sneak one of those by TSA

Do you happen to have an account at a bank that also has a branch in/near Chicago? If so you can withdraw the cash when you get there.

I wonder what people do that have the opposite situation -- they bring stuff to sell and end up carrying a boat load of cash on their way home...

    Two things have overtaken me.

    1. Jealousy
    2. Drool. ( Lots of it )

ETA: I don't have any helpful advice, I just couldn't resist the temptation to "crack wise". Thank you for your understanding of this matter, and enjoy your stay in the United States.

I don't believe there are any laws pertaining to citizens of the United States flying domestic flights with regards to the amount of USD they can carry at any one time. I may have unknowingly been breaking the law, but I've flown countless times with $10,000+. Most of the time, it was on trips back and forth to Las Vegas or other casino destination cities. Maybe only 2 or 3 times was it ever even commented on by airport security, but I'm sure I was small potatoes compared to what some other high rollers bring through. This was mostly in my younger days, so now with society going more cashless, casinos facilitating easier lines of credit, and there being a heightened awareness of mostly nefarious reasons for traveling with large sums of cash, maybe they've started cracking down more. I would think that as long as they've not added any new laws that I'm unaware of, just having a legitimate story ready that you're destination is Chicago, you're going to The National, and you plan to spend money, then I'm sure you're not the first guy flying there that they've seen come through with fat stacks of Benjis.

A lawyer should definitely chime in but I believe they have the right to pull you out and question you on any amount $10,000 or over and you may have to prove how you came into that money in order to get it back. I only say this because I remember a lawyer friend talking about flying private if he were ever going to go to a National and go bananas.

I'm not saying they will, I'm saying they can. To me, it's not worth the risk.

Some collectors will laugh at Vagabond's post saying, "That's all he taking ? That's pocket change" while others who take only between $500 - $3000 wil say, "HOLY _HIT, that SOB is wealthy !!!"

Agreed to a point, and I’m the biggest CC user for points, I never carry cash save a few bucks for tolls ect.. BUT at a card show I think it’s much easier to maneuver with cash than CC. As far as worrying about anything I wouldn’t. Who gives a crap if you get a question about it, it’s not like your breaking any laws. I’d be more concerned about transporting 10K worth of cards or a 10k card.

I appreciate all the real responses. It's probably then a safe bet to bring copies of bank statements so they can see that the money has been in the bank for sometime and so they know where the cash came from.

The bank I have is everywhere across the U.S. and its a well know national chain but I decided to already have the cash on hand so I can be ready once I arrive and not have any issues accessing my cash from the bank. Some banks are not prepared to hand out so much cash and typically you need to make an appointment in order for the to have the cash ready for a particular day. But I already did that. The concern was flying with so much. I respectfully choose not to disclose the amount so I just went with $10,000 since that's the limit for International.

I don’t know the specific answer to whether documentation is required, but the more you have, including your tickets to the show to establish your reason for traveling, etc, the better. You might want to read up on the civil asset forfeiture laws. Large amounts of cash, and flights to a major metro area returning within a few days of each other, can set off alarm bells for connection to drug trafficking. Especially if a dog alerts, since there is drug residue on lots of cash in circulation. You could get caught up in what at best would be an unpleasant delay and at worst would be a long legal proceeding in which you have to prove the cash is not connected to criminal activity. If there is a way to declare ahead of time I would look into it.

[This isn't legal advice. Just my perspective.]

There is no requirement to declare cash for intra-US travel. The $10K "limit" for US Customs isn't actually a limit. It's just the amount at which you must declare it to customs (which I imagine will lead to multiple questions).

I personally wouldn't sweat carrying a decent amount of cash through the airport, at least from a "search and seizure" perspective, but don't see much upside. I say that having no criminal record, never being under audit, not earning my money from my own business, and being a white collar worker. Being in my 40s also probably helps.

I would have concerns about theft. If it were me, I would have the cash at the ready at the local bank, as you have done.

In addition, assuming you don't spend all of the cash, when you go to redeposit at the bank, you will be asked to fill out a short form explaining where the cash came from. It does get reported to the IRS.

If you do determine to carry cash, I would keep it with a copy of the bank withdrawal receipt. If you have one, I would also have my business card handy.

More than likely the bank you use has a branch rather close to the national. It just seems like taking the cash with you carries more of a burden than getting to Chicago and finding a branch to quickly pull the money out before heading to the National.

Without fail, every year there are a few people that get rolled for a lot of money and/or cards and everyone always says "Why were they carrying that on them?" Not victim blaming, just saying, be smart. The goal should be moving the risk factor to as close to zero as possible. If that's inconvenient, well, life is tough sometimes.

    Just my $0.02.

No restrictions on a US citizen carry how ever much cash he or she pleases on a domestic flight and it’s NONE of TSA’s business.

That being said, TSA can inspect any carry on you bring with you for valid security concerns. If they don’t have some issue with the X-ray machine not being able to see things clearly in you carry on then they could do a further search to make sure you aren’t carry any prohibited item.

You can also get selected for random screening, but whatever that entails should have nothing to do with the fact that you are carrying cash.

If they try to do any more than the above then demand to speak to the supervisor and insist that they follow the laws and regulations that apply to all. Get his/her name and the names of anyone who your feel is gong beyond their authority. Also get the badge numbers.

And if you happen to be traveling with someone you can always have them hang back of you by a few people (or go ahead) and video your security experience so you have documentation.

And despite the title printed on TSA employee badges they are NOT federal officers and have no power to act as such.

I don’t see any benefits whatsoever with carrying around cash in the K’s or many multiple K’s. It’s old world, archaic, risky, etc. If a deal can’t be made without that kind of cold cash on hand I’d question the integrity of said deal.
