Is it just me, or does it look like this 1838 seated dime look cleaned?

Its hard to get a good picture of what im talking about, but lady liberty seems very shiny, to me, which, in most coins that ive seen labeled as "cleaned", seems to be a common factor.
I paid $200 for it, and the seller said that he hadnt seen any sign that it had been cleaned, but im not sure...
Do you guys think i got screwed over?

Let me know if some other pictures are necessary.

It looks cleaned and re-toned(questionable color). I know nothing about the date or the value, sorry I can't help with whether or not you "got screwed over".

Not bad for early seated coinage but as with most of them, not the original skin. Not harshly cleaned but striped and retoned

  • Im still very new to collecting and wanted one worthy of sending off, for grading, but I suppose that coin isnt this one and ill try for a refund 😖😠. Thanks guys!

Looks AU to me...dipped and retoned afterward...pretty much exactly what Crypto said...so not harshly cleaned or polished to these eyes at least ;)

I think it would grade ok (market acceptable).

While the coin may grade at a TPG, it looks as if it did have a prior cleaning that is fairly well covered now by tarnish....It could grade....Great pictures though....Cheers, RickO

  • Whats tpg? And you guys are thinking that It would be worth my while to send it on in?

TPG is Third-party grader. PCGS, NGC, etc.

I am not seeing the typical "halos" around the stars and other raised areas, indicative of a cleaning. I think that it be ok...I have been wrong before, which is why I normally buy TPG certified (with rare exceptions) coins for my collection.

Based on the pics I don't see any way that this coin would grade. Cleaned and retoned to me.

Don't think that it would straight grade.
