Thoughts on $3 gold type coin look
I am getting ready to try and add a $3 gold type coin to my set. While having seen many coins that are nice, I don’t often find many in my price range. Recently, I have seen two that I might consider, however they have very different looks. I tried to adjust the pics so sellers aren’t known and to just get thoughts on the look and coin.
I know it’s personal preference, but I am still 50/50...most of my type coins are fairly generic old gold and look like the untuned piece, however my classic head gold coins are toned and slightly worn and may look better next to the toned coin.. These two coins are not the same grade, but close.
As I am still learning about grading and gold, curious to people’s thoughts on which coin they like and why.
This isn’t a trick question, just someone trying to get some opinions as the longer I collect, the more my tastes evolve and I seem to eventually get insight into why some of the long term posters like the coins they do.
Thanks for any thoughts.

I like them both.
If the price is right, buy the one that pleases you the most.
Always buy $3 gold slabbed. After that it is all a matter of price. Don't overpay for anything in spite of what some dealers will tell you.
Both of the coins you show seem like nice type coins. If the price is right, take your choice. If the price isn't right keep looking until it is. $3 gold coins are not rare.
I am a fan of the top one. I like the coloration much more and it pops more. I think the "dirt" especially around the U and A on the bottom one would bother me.
Granted the photography or lighting seems different between the two, but I also like the look of the top one better.
Would love to see that one in an OGH slab.
I don’t know if the color is accurate, but if it is, the top coin is a bit to reddish for me.
Mark Feld* of Heritage Auctions*Unless otherwise noted, my posts here represent my personal opinions.
The photos are different because they are from two different ( well known) dealers websites. I zoomed in on the pics to not show slab # or website info, so quality of the pics might be different. Both coins are slabbed and one has a green bean.
Although the coins are not the same price, they are both within the price range I am hoping to stay in $900-$1300. I’ve been looking for awhile and while I see many nicecoins, they are often more than I can spend, and the ones at auction all seem to exceed expected prices if I decide to bid.
So these two have both caught my eye, are available at a time when I have the funds to make the purchase, but are very different in appearance. A year ago, i wouldn’t even looked at the toned coin, but the more old gold that I look at, the more I seem to appreciate that look and authentic ness.
Thanks for the comments so far.
I like the reddish color. Personal taste I guess.
The mark behind the head on the top coin would bother me a little, but I like the color. Unless the bottom coin was closer to your lower.price limit and had the bean, I would take the top one
Pick the one you like.... It is your collection, build it with coins that you are attracted to.... What others think is not necessarily what will please you or fit with your coins....That being said, I prefer the bottom coin... Cheers, RickO
Tough call. looks like a choice between interesting color and cleaner surface. However, big photos can of course mislead (not intentionally) either way. That being the case, I would take the one with the bean even if the difference (if higher) in price is, say, 10%. I'm not a blind fan of CAC, but their reputation of being picky with gold and the fact that you know another pro has seen the coin in hand can't be ignored if both coins appeal to you. Me, I like the color, subject to seeing the surfaces in hand.
I just got my $3 back in March. Have fun choosing one, they are a really cool type coin in my opinion!

I like old olive based gold personally.
11.5$ Southern Dollars, The little “Big Easy” set
I like the second one better. The face and neck have less marks and the fields are cleaner. The dirt around the letters doesn’t bother me and I think it even enhances the look of the coin.
The top one has more luster in the open fields, so it would grade higher.
The top looks like an 1878.
I'm not sure about the lower one.
I’d like to thank everyone for their comments. It has helped me better relate what I am seeing in each coin to the technical aspects of luster, clean fields, color, dirt, and most importantly, overall eye appeal( which is unique to each person). I am amazed sometimes by what many of you can tell from pics. Hope this doesnt cause someone to run at and buy the coin, but if so, likely would make my decision easier.
The top coin is a 78, it is a slightly higher grade, slightly higher priced, and has a bean.
As I said, I appreciate and like both coins, but can only get one. I will continue to think about each coin and how it fits in with my other gold coins and see which makes me smile more. Hoping that my indecision and waiting on the final funds doesn’t cause me to miss out on both, I will post the one I end up getting.
Thanks again.
I don't think you'll go wrong when you pull the trigger , regardless of which one
I would choose the bottom example based on the pictures. The top is too red for my taste and I don't like the toning. Tough to really choose without seeing them in hand, where it matters most (for me).
I don't mind either one; would take either, but bottom one is my preference. Pick your poison and hope you enjoy the one you get!
Agreed, that a bit of crusty dirt in the letters of old gold is A-OK by me. Lest anyone think that's a guarantee of originality though, beware, as coin docs are apt to add and grind in dirt selectively if they feel it will be well-received.
I like the warm color on the top one.
So, indecision and timing of funds caused the bottom coin(in the posts above) to sell before I could pull the trigger. Had still been debating the top coin, but the price was higher than I felt I could stretch for right now. There seemed to be an abundance of $3 gold in the recent auctions, so, I decided to follow a few. Look versus anticipated price had me gravitating towards two coins, and I decided to place a bid that I thought was fair for one of the coins, but when I do that I usually am outbid. The bid did hold up and I ended up winning this coin, which will now join my gold type set. For me, the eye appeal versus price made it equal or better to the other coins. Hopefully I saved enough to be able to add a type 3 gold dollar later this year.
Looks like XF40 cleaned to me but still a nice type coin. A slightly better date instead off the typical 54,74 and 78 adds to the appeal. At the right price I'd be happy with it.
Top coin is nicer...no question about it to me. Color looks great.

I like the looks of the top coin as well

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Top one for the old gold look. Both are nice. Pick the one you like best. Your collection, your taste.
