I don't see Lincoln sitting in the Memorial, or steps either. Damage is extensive. I probably would not pick it up if I saw it lying on a parking lot, unless it was head's up.
My US Mint Commemorative Medal Set
Nice find! Too bad these polished out designs are not as popular as they were at one time. Hold on to it for now and look for one in better condition.
Good eye, @White_Beard_TN .
Still worth $5 or so even as is.
These are tough in nice unc.
If you can ever find someone who will pay $5 for that take the money and run. I wouldn't want it for 2 cents.
To me, coins struck from overpolished dies are among the least interesting in the world of "errors". I have held this view since I started collecting in 1961.
I agree that in most cases it's not an exciting type of error.
But I have sold several of these 69-D no FG in higher circ. grades for $5-10.
I don't doubt that, in the internet world, there are people who would pay good money for an "error" of that kind. However, and this applies to many things in the field of collectibles, there are many things I would never buy at all. I call them "take the money and run collectibles".
Unexpected flash flooding resulting from global warming and climate change.
@White_Beard_TN... Nice find... and a keeper. I would put that in my curio collection - odd issues that are interesting, but not a lot of value. Good pictures too... Cheers, RickO
No seated Lincoln, No FG, Floating Roof!
All caused by excessive die polishing.
Nice one!
wow.
these come in all die stages of progression. i have coins 100% with FG and literally, reduced 5% (95/90/85/80) all the way to 0%. i seriously have one that is probably 5% and luckily a few 0%. seems like different dies too. some with no fg with abe, no fg no abe and of course all with floaters. the obv lapel took some hits as well. haven't seen any re-engraved yet like with other coin series.
at the end of a long but decent day so no more commentary. just a couple pics.
ps: also searched some old-time 69s bu rolls. had my fingers and toes crossed for the big one but i was really holding out for a mirror brockage 69s fs101 or possibly a rotated double struck making it a quad. how absolutely amazing would THAT be?!?!?
maybe there should be a second variety, "Weak FG" My latest 1969-D 1C acquisition has various stages of FG, weak, faint and none.
LanceNewmanOCC: maybe send the weakest FG in for grading? I have the same coins, no or really weak FG. I'm going to wait for the FUN show and get the 2 that I have graded on sight, or at least get their opinion on site.
.
i did and i sent 2 no-brainers in and then some extras to see where the line is drawn and they were STRICT. got 2 of 6 attributed.
in the future type @ then someone's name and it will tag them if they have notifications on which i think it is by default.
@LanceNewmanOCC: Could you post a photo of what they consider No FG. The ROLL of 1969-D that I have are about half No FG. I'm going to send in two if they look anything like yours.
mine
no FG PERIOD! no scraps, shadows, hopes or dreams. look at your coin from every angle, make sure it is a floating roof as well since we don't know the other diagnostics they may use. the image above shows the outline of the letters. based on the coins i submitted, that wouldn't pass muster. this doesn't mean others won't get some through. just the nature of the beast.
thanks for the tag.
@LanceNewmanOCC: I might take a chance at the FUN show in January with the PCGS folks in-person. I may try to get them to recognize a variety, somehow, with some help from a fellow collector, you. Weak FG? Worth a shot.
Update, best of my No FG type that I thought I had. Returned MS 65. That's it. Not a No FG.

@LanceNewmanOCC oh well
found in my change, thought this one has to be one. Nope.

worth a shot but i'm tellin' ya now (again) there must be NO visible FG from any angle.
i have several that can only bee seen from certain angles but they were kicked back. i knowingly took the chance to see where they drew the line. the line is strict. lol
i am willing to bet it is the same with the walkers no AW, kennedy no FG, buffs no F etc. to be fair, probably a good thing as the pops would simply explode otherwise and they aren't called weak FG. hehe
there is an absolute plethora of these in the 60s & 70s with varying degrees of weakness.
neat, you tried one from your change.
nice images from the photo dept. though.
Never knew of this variety.
Pretty cool finds!
BST: KindaNewish (3/21/21), WQuarterFreddie (3/30/21), Meltdown (4/6/21), DBSTrader2 (5/5/21) AKA- unclemonkey on Blow Out
if i had a couple dozen of these, i'd give some thought to sending some to ngc and anacs JUST to see where they draw the line but go into it knowing, the endeavor would most likely be futile.
i know a lot of people that send certain stuff to certain tpg's based on how they handle coins and there are plenty of areas they don't overlap on things.
@LanceNewmanOCC with this knowledge, I'll keep hunting. This topic should help others, glad to be the one who attempted. I'm not going to try NGC or ANACS, I've seen one for sale on eBay, the FG is slightly visible.
.
just so i'm certain what you mean. you mean certified and attributed?
Yep.... I can see that shadow of the FG. Just like most of the other abraded initial varieties... if there is a trace, it won't place! But still neat varieties. Reminds me.. I have a 1966 SMS half that years ago I thought was the no initial variety... may have to take another look to see if it really is the sought after rarity...
@LanceNewmanOCC the coin I saw on eBay is a NGC 1969-D No FG, it still has the FG, very slightly. Look up NGC cert # 6481816-043, AU58 BN
.
can't look it up w/o the grade at ngc cert verify.
probably won't be any use unless there is one of ngc's pro images like the TV. photovision? can't recall what it is at ngc.
Found this on file... But EHHHH... ahhhh...Well ?

I'd be guessing without in hand. Photo's were enhanced to pull the FG out.
.
well a mere 3, 092 posts and FINALLY a couple images i can understand what i'm looking at.
APPEARS to be no FG.
Also,
The Floating Roof saga does not always support the no FG image. The percentage is, as I flew by them is ?
Damm, more homework,
Here's one and done for tonight.

.
@LanceNewmanOCC the NGC coin is AU58 BN
