Lincoln's Ghost coin 98-D Penny

Hello folks, first post for me. Been searching my brains out trying to find something interesting. Lots of off strikes and die breaks but then I came across this guy. a very weird 98-d. along the right side of his silhouette is an impression of his head all the way up from his tie making it look like a ghost behind him. the rest of the obverse is like it had a soft layer of copper when it was stamped and the letters are all soft edged. the coin has a wavy effect across the face. anyone ever see one like this i searched and found nothing.

I really can't tell from the photos. Could be struck twice in the collar. with slight rotation in between strikes. Do you see any other details consistent with that?

  • not really. very hard to photograph. the ghost part is recessed in the coin. there are three very slight waves of indented pressure forming the recessed silhouette. then you have the typ relief image.

  • this is the back and another shot of the front. its strange how the ghost area or rear silhouette is concave into the coin and then you have the typ convex or relief image on top

Yep, and it appears that the die cap that struck this coin rotated somewhat between strikes.

Since the rotation makes for an interesting feature, error collectors often put a premium on it.
