Proposed elongated coin project- what do you think?

lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 43,687 ✭✭✭✭✭

I've sent out some email inquiries on this project.

I will likely have 75-100 rolled out on Mercury dimes. Then another 200-500 on Wheat cents.

This is only a rough sketch, and since all I have for photo editing is MS Paint, I couldn't do the curved fonts, but you (and the manufacturer) should hopefully be able to get the basic idea.

Rough sketch:

The main design element is a family crest- the Scottish clan badge of Clan Robertson (my maternal line).

This is an SVG file from the Wikimedia Commons, so it should be covered under Fair Use, and I think it's the right vector filetype that these companies like to use (I only just recently read up a little on vector graphics).

Robertson clan badge- SVG file:

I would then issue the final product in printed and hand-signed flips with limited edition numbering.

What do you think? I think some silver elongates would be special.

Very nice crest... what do the symbols at the base represent?? Could not figure them out.... Cheers, RickO

It's like a looped-over belt. There's a buckle/clasp on it. Truth be told, this Wikimedia rendering is not my favorite- the crown is too small, for one thing- but this version should work better for the engraving.

I prefer the antique badge in my present avatar, but that, and the hat-tipping portrait of me in my other default avatar, are not suitable for transition to these dies.

Thanks @lordmarcovan .....I see that now that you explain it.... and I do like your avatar.....Cheers, RickO

Very fun! I loved collecting "pressed pennies" as a kid and still have them.

Buffalo nickels would be very cool. It would make for a much larger final product.

Indeed. Not everybody could roll them, however. Might present some challenges to the manufacturer. I know it's possible to roll nickels on some equipment, but it might or might not cost a bit more. Dunno.

    RE: Symbology. "It's like a looped-over belt. There's a buckle/clasp on it."

Belt (honor) with fermail surrounding --
Crest: A hand (faithfulness) holding a Royal Crown (possibly from the time of Henry VII).
The crest in this instance is a wreath of twisted cloth. It normally has six twists of material with the metal and color alternating from Dexter to sinister with metal first.

Form is consistent with Scottish heraldry. Crown indicates loyalty to the English King.

[In a more modern interpretation, the clan Robertson badge indicates that they all work for Target stores in the Men's or Ladies' Apparel Departments.]

@SourApple @SaorAlba - I want that! Despite my ancestry, I have yet to own a piece of Scottish hammered silver, or indeed any Scottish coin at all, in 43 years of collecting, with the possible exception of a Scottish Conder token in the past, maybe.

(Most of the "family crests" and similar items are just for fun. They are not legitimately associated with any family except the original grantee.)

Your right the crown is too small and lettering on the belt is too big.

But I will definitely purchase in silver.

It is a James V(1513-1542) Groat, the Scots were always ahead of the Anglish in introducing more modern coins, James IV introduced 3/4 bust coins, James V renaissance side portraits, the first dated British coins were from 1539 in Scotland. This coin is just more attractive, yet so much scarcer than the contemporary Anglish groats of HVIII.

I was really hot for a James VI coin a while back (I forget the denom). I reckon he was also James I of England, right?

Anyway, I've taken a stab at a few 16th and 17th century Scottish pieces a time or two, but have yet to win one.

I might rectify that shortcoming by the end of the year. We shall see. :)

Thanks for those who have shown an interest in the elongates. It'll likely be a month or more before these are produced. Of course I'll be giving a lot of them away (the Wheaties, at least).

Very artistic @lordmarcovan ...... couldn't wait to see them both :)

  • lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 43,687 ✭✭✭✭✭

The same die will be used on both the Mercs and the Wheaties, so the design will have a pretty narrow border on the dimes and a bit wider on the cents.

    Au contraire, I think that's a neat-looking crest.

The host coins have been received by the contractor and the dies are being prepared. I should have some samples to look at in early September.

I'll offer them on BST after I get 'em and print up the inserts for whatever flips or holders I'm going to release them in.

This will likely still take a little while yet, as those images were merely the ones the contractor sent me for proofing (approval).

She will now roll them all out to complete the order.

When they are received, I will of course also have some drawings to give some away.
