the buyer will be charged the sales tax if they live in any one of these 13 states. I am happy with what I already have. the margins are too thin on coins to take on these new taxes. if the states put the money to good use it would be different, but they don't

I have already noticed a major decrease in my purchases on eBay due to recent N.Y. tax. I am sure it will hurt my selling on eBay for the same reasons.

Both red and blue States. I guess both sides love raising taxes. Ugh.

California already passed a law on this. Last time i read it, if I read it correctly, it takes effect October 1.> @pab1969 said:

I have heard that ebay slaps the tax on there but that it is up to the seller to remit the taxes to the state. Is that correct? If so, I can envision some ebay sellers getting an extra 5-10% on each sale and then not remitting to the state tax commissions. I would guess that ebay will send information to those states on which sellers have collected what amounts of tax?

I lost out on a sale twice because the buyer was being charged sales tax. They asked me if I could lower the price to make up for the sales tax, but I did not and lost the sales. I might have to increase prices slightly to allow me to lower the price when a buyer from a sales-tax state asks me to lower the price.

if the price of the coin isn't below gray sheet, I don't see a person in a tax state buying, I also see the majority of the states having this law in the next 18 months

No... eBay collects the tax and remits it to the states... Sellers are not involved at all.

    Thanks for the clarification!

So I guess I'm confused . . . even without this being enforced, aren't you obligated to pay "use tax" on your annual state income tax returns?

No, the tax payments are completely separate payments and paid direct to eBay who remits all taxes on sellers behalf.

When you pay, you will see two separate payments in PayPal, one for item with shipping and one for sales tax.

  • Every State?

Every state that has a sales tax... that seems to be where it's headed.

For those in states where the online tax is already in place, is 4SC collecting it? Sirius?

    To expand on this...

When you complete a purchase using PayPal, you'll actually see two transactions - one to the seller for the item, another to eBay for the tax.

I think this will have a significant impact on our hobby. Things may adjust but the difference in sales tax is going to kill small time sellers in high sales taxes states.

This will increase the popularity of card shows, where cash is king!

  • ndleondleo Posts: 4,143 ✭✭✭✭✭

For some states this isn't a big deal. For us in CA or NY, it's a huge deal. I looked at my recent purchases and adding 10% to them would make me want to cancel the shopping cart.

I would be happy if this caused more shows to happen in SoCal.

Yes, but few did. Back when I lived in a state that collected sales/use tax, the first time I used H&R Block tax software, it defaulted to $0. Actually, in that state if you bought something while you traveled to another state with lower sales tax you were required to remit the difference as use tax. Not sure how widespread that is, but sure that use tax compliance was far below 5%.

It doesn't matter what state the seller is in, only what state the buyer is in.

I can also see "off ebay" sales becoming more popular as well since it would save the seller fees and buyer taxes at the same time
