What does "Set Break" mean in regards to a card.

Looking at a Topps card for sale and it says Set Break. OK now you all know I'm not the sharpest pencil in the box.
Thanks for your help

That means hat seller has a possibly full set of that card he is selling such as 1956 topps baseball.

    example 1956 topps baseball mantle

he is selling more 1956 topps cards. It is a good way to help people who may be interested acquire more cards

and often means lower shipping costs.

Pretty much what Jay said. It's a way to let people know you are selling one-by-one every card from a set.

Thanks. When I checked his other auctions they were all 1968 topps. All makes sense now.

Same thing as an “Estate Sale”. It’s typically just nonsense

It means the collectors wife tolerated the initial set build but now wants the funds back to renovate the kitchen and/or master bath.

I wouldn't say it means nothing at all. If anything, you are probably getting the higher end cards inside each grade (for the most part) as a set builder typically is much more strict with what goes into a PC set.

One of the many annoying keyword spamming tricks used on Ebay...such as saying "near set" when it's short like 50 or more cards.

And really the word rare should be banned from being in a item listing topic as well.

I find “set” to be less annoying when cards are involved than using “cat” when cards are involved.

What I mean is that I'm a set collector and it's super annoying to see listings with set in the title and it's not even close to being a complete set. Hence why it's important Ebay has their no keyword spamming rule.

Yes!! When you are listing 3 cards out of a 200 card set and use "set break" in the title it is super annoying. Some guy posted ONE 62 Jell-O card and titled it as "set break". I asked if he had more that he was listing because of his title. He never responded. I think that a lot of people see that GMC uses it in their title and they get good money so sellers have adopted it.

Only works if eBay actually enforces the keyword spamming rule. I repeatedly report folks who use PSA 10 in the title for raw cards, but it seems eBay never actually takes any of the auctions down.

The ones that get caught in my saved searches are "case fresh," "box fresh," and "pack fresh." I guess I should update my search to include "-fresh."

As a set builder myself, when searching for the cards I need, I always use the key words "set break" in the description for the card I'm looking for. When used properly by sellers, when that item comes up, it lets me know to view their other items for sale within that set in order to get combined shipping discounts. Yes, a few spammers do get through, but I usually shop by price and condition also, so I don't mind so much if they "trick" me into looking if they happen to be more economically priced or in pristine condition. If they are overpriced or in lesser condition, I don't click on the listing, anyway, so no harm, no foul. Someone legitimately breaking a set, even if it's just a partial one, I would personally prefer they list it with the the words "set break".

"Near set" in the listing for a specific lot doesn't bother me, in the least, either, no matter how far it is from completion. I've found some killer deals on the start of many sets that way.

When I see the word "fresh" used in a listing, I tend to think I'm purchasing fruits/vegetables as well.
