    I wonder if that is maybe some sort of gold-plated vintage cast counterfeit (made for the purpose of spending at face value for a profit) ?

    Yes, viewing it in the pics it certainly is not a typical transfer die Chinese effort. Looks hand engraved (the dies at least) Or perhaps more accuratly a transfer die that has had the detail touched up (feathers, lettering,etc)
