Long Beach Show Report
So this was an unexpected show for me but as it turned out my son lives in So Cal and we drove out to help around the new house he bought. Wanting to take a break from house projects I suggested we drive 30 miles up to Long Beach on Friday arriving around 11:15. It was all very calm and a short line at the PCGS table so we stopped there first to drop off 2 bust halves for cross over as that is what my son collects.
Then it was off to the floor where we visited with Mike Kiittle, Charmy Harper, and Andy Skrabalak as we passed their tables. My son eventually picked up 2 new bust halves - one upgrade and one hole filler while I found nothing which is not unusual. I generally walk out of the biggest shows empty handed since I am a cherry picker of Lincoln Cents. Of course there were plenty of upgrades I could have purchased as far as regular strikes but that is not where the fun is.
I was living in California from 2010 - 2016 and would attend this show at least twice a year. It has changed. It was not completely booked and about 20% or more is now sports memorabilia, antique jewelry and other odd stuff. Sometimes you wonder why these folks are here but I guess there are enough of my fellow collectors who also collect this kind of stuff .
For me it means a shorter show visit with fewer coin dealer tables. As we walked out around 2:00 I noticed eBay has a table with 2 bored young men so I did what anyone of you would have done - I stopped by to complain. I told them that in case they where not aware, there has been in my opinion a sharp increase in bogus first time sellers selling circulated cents as proofs, common cents as expensive varieties, etc. and that this in my opinion started with the roll out of the listing for dummies format as I call it. Once a seller types in a dated coin, up pops a screen with a dozen pictures and current prices. Needless to say some are scammers, but I believe many assume their uncirculated 1936 D cent has to be the same as the $5,000 proof example. They listened and encouraged me to notify them when these are seen so they can investigate. Yeah right.
Anyway overall, a good show, a quality time spent with my son. What more can you ask for?

If I worked for eBay, I’d keep my resume updated. Their Golden Age has ended.
Very nice, how are Andy and Alynne? Always my favorite table to stop by at LB.
My Collection of Old Holders
Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
All we contacted on the dealer side of the table were busy enough. As far as eBay, they were just there for PR., and not selling or even handing out flyers.
My sons has the bust half set under the Everyman collections listed as gonfunko. He is after unmessed with, “ got the look” halves with aged patina and originality. You can see the set here.
