Memorial Day...Coins and Veterans Graves

I just returned from spending most of the day at the Northern Nevada Veterans Cemetery. At each grave site and crypt there was an American Flag blowing in the wind...acres full. I was awe struck. While looking for family and friends I started seeing coins on the head stones and crypts...pennys, nickels, dimes and a few quarters. I have never seen this before so I started asking questions. I was told that this started during the Viet Nam War and is getting more and more popular. If you visit you leave a penny (nobody said cent), if you served in boot camp together you leave a nickel, if you served together you leave a dime and if you were with the soldier when he died in battle you leave a quarter. Didn't see too many quarters...Wow...what a day. Take care...

The tradition has been outlined nicely in this thread - I think leaving coins on veterans headstones started before the VietNam war....ICBW...Cheers, RickO
