1857p $1 Liberty Seated Dollar ( added to my set )

I have been focusing very hard over the last couple years on SLDs. My original goal was to put together a full date and mintmark set (excluding 70s) in XF45. I choose this grade because I felt it offered the best bang for your buck details wise and thought I could afford it. I started off buying the cheapest examples I could find. I got through about 9 coins and ended up finding out about the LSCC . I joined and met a few members who mentored me and quickly found out how to tell the difference between problem crap coins and quality. This was tough to learn because I thought I was on a roll. Every single one I had purchased was a crap coin. They were all straight graded by PCGS & NGC but they all had problems. I quickly went to work spending countless hours (ask my wife) doing research on the series and looked at my LSCC buddy’s coins learning all that I could about the series. Over the past couple years I have bought the best examples I possibly could . My goal is still essentially the same but has evolved. I’m striving for a date and mintmark set (XF when possible) but grade is not the most important thing . I buy choice examples whenever they come up (and I have the cash) in VF30-AU55. I am getting closer to the end now which is exciting. But the remaining coins I need are all big ticket items and will have to be done over time. Not just because of the cash needed for each purchase but because some of them simply don’t come up for sale. I added this choice 1857 recently and would love to hear what this forum thinks of her. She is the nicest circulated 57 I have ever seen (In my grade range) . I had to give a lot to get her. But an old timer once told me ... Great coins don’t come cheap and cheap coins aren’t great. I did not hesitate on this one. Choice originally, crusty surfaces, and fits in well with the rest of my set . If you are like me and like your ladies sitting ... Then you know how tough it is to find a crusty original 1857 .

Crusty,
I really like that 57 dollar!!! I haven’t ever seen another like it in circ grades and doubt I will. Great pick up!
Would love to see more if this set you are working on...
About as nice a strike as you can find on this usually seen flat head/flat star coin. Very nice.
That looks like a wonderful example.

That is a nice coin... I am sure you are excited about getting it and nearing the completion of your set. Best of luck... Cheers, RickO
Wow
What a sweet looking coin. Congratulation
You deserve it!
Yep, that's a tough series. 57 isn't available that often.
I like seated dollars.
Really tough date in the series, congrats on acquiring it!
An authorized PCGS dealer, and a contributor to the Red Book.
That’s a beautiful original looking coin. Congrats!
Congratulations on picking that up.
And thank you for taking the time to write out your collecting thought process and changes you made to it. Threads like this help others on their collecting journeys.
I appreciate all the positive feedback guys. It really is a special coin. As far as the strike goes... It is better then most I have seen . This date is one of the hardest to find with a decent strike . Looking at old auction records this coin use to reside in an NGC AU53 holder with a CAC sticker. Whoever crossed her over to PCGS also sent it back to CAC and JA updated the CAC pop (there are no AU53 CACs currently). I don’t see a situation where I will ever be able to part with her. When I Started this set I had no clue how hard it would be and really didn’t understand how much money it would take . I’m just taking it one coin at a time now. Slowly but surely it has become a respectable set. I don’t know how long it will take to complete but I'm in it for the long haul. Just a handful of coins left to go.... Sounds so close yet I know it is very far away.
Very nice choice

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Sometimes an AU50 is a low end ugly AU, punished as such. Other times it’s a high end original coin, rewarded as a step above XF. Yours is def the latter, congrats.
Congratulations! Great example of a tough date with original toning. She found a good home with lots of crusty brothers & sisters.
Beautiful example. I also have been looking but have yet to come across one that caused me to move. Congrats!
