I see it. Well... ...I don't see the horizontal lines near the top.

This was an early '80's issue was it not?

What lines and at the top of what are you talking about?

The rest of the coin image?

The reverse design has been changed so many times that for example, the building is entirely different on a 2016 nickel and one dated 2000. The 1965 is also different but closer to the image you posted.

I'm going to guess the two structures on the roof on both sides of the dome are not complete. Polishing error or transitional?

‘64 from Coin Facts for comparison.

The rectangular portions on the east and west of the dome is missing.

Yeah, the balcony has been abraded off! It seems like the Jefferson Nickel should have some abraded varieties, right! The Buffalo Nickel series has a whole bunch of them. This would be the perfect one to start with. I have more than one of these so it would not be a toughie!

Oh by the way, this is a 1971-D. I have not seen this level of abrasion on any other date.....yet!

So, do I win a prize?? LOL

Now, please educate us. Is this a listed variety? Are they rare and you have been searching for a long time?

This is not a listed variety, though I should float it past James Wiles to get his take. I have not looked at 1971-D's for quite some time, but back when I was, I would estimate I noticed this maybe 1 in 20 or more. I'm going into eBay and take a look. I have a couple from way back when.

This one seems noticeable enough to warrant recognition. All those 2 Feather Buffalos seem to cause quite a stir. Why not have a few abraded Jeffersons to hunt for? I will have to go look, but have an interesting Jefferson where his neck is completely gone. I'll post it in the next Variety of the Week.

I just went into eBay and looked at the first 50 1971-D's and saw one that was close, but still had a trace of the balcony.

Interesting. I will need to look at quite a few more.

At first glance, I would have said the bottom step is missing.... well, it is.... ;) Cheers, RickO
