Picked up a new super tough PL, 1893-P

blu62vetteblu62vette Posts: 11,901 ✭✭✭✭✭

Recently picked up a new super tough date PL, a 1893 PCGS 61PL. Top grade for PL is a 62 and there are only 7 in all grades. About the same pop in DMPL, and the same top pop a 62. Very happy with this pickup!! The coin actually has very nice mirrors and would be a PL in any date.

When I think 61 I think issues. You must have been happily surprised :)
Exceptional contrast and clarity accentuates the depth. <3
    Congrats :)

From the photos, that one looks much nicer than "MS-61." - unless something odd is not visible in the photos. Compare with the same authentication company's usual MS-62 and 63 Morgan dollars.

Yes, for sure. Most the time a 61 Morgan would have a cheek unrecognizable after a knife fight. This cheek is great. The 61 is harsh, but on tougher date PL's grading seems to be conservative. I have an 1886-O PL in the same boat.

PL is created by the dies and is completely irrelevant to any post-striking surface abrasion or damage. Since "grade" must only be a function of post-striking surface abrasion or damage, it is immaterial if the fields are mirror-like. :)

Your 1893 61PL looks much nicer than the given grade, I would pay 62 money for it. Tough one to find with only 7 known PL's noted the PCGS population report.
