Please Help Trade Dollar Variety

1877 S MS62 with Reverse Variety

Need help determining if this piece commands a premium.

Quote from Breen's Encyclopedia

Large S. Blunt tail to R of DOLLAR, but no periods after E of FINE or R of DOLLAR: Not in Walter Breen's Encyclopedia. Fewerthan a dozen seen to date. Discovered by James R. Arnold (his specimen is EF and weighs 417.9 grains). The period after the final A in AMERICA is a tiny crescent. Evidently the hub was damaged. "Does this occur on 1878 trades of any mint?" asks Walter H. Breen.

No premium is associated with this variety, in fact I don't know anyone who collects Trade Dollar varieties based off of Breen's list. One reason may be that there are errors in the list, and it's an incomplete list.

Cool coin! Your coin is categorized as a Type 2M/2M (6 lege segments). So far, the advanced collectors mostly don't care about missing periods, etc. I'd hold on to it as there is a Reference Book on Trade dollars in the works. For now, The Liberty Seated Collectors Club published a lot of info on these coins in their Journal.

I'll add that there are a lot of "errors" in the Bowers book also. I like to think that when most references are published by respected numismatists such as both these men, they are the best that is available at the time. These books become the stepping stones for the next generation of researchers. For that reason, while there may be some actual errors, I never have looked at it that way myself.

  • Do you believe there is a premium to the coin? As noted less than a dozen are known to exist.

Probably not at the moment unless you can find a variety collector. Generally, with collectibles, if there are two specimens known and only one collector.... :(

Sometimes, knowledgeable collectors will poo-poo a variety while hoarding them whenever they find one. :)

Bree's book imho shouldn't never be relied upon. In his book practically everything is uber rare.

True, but at the time many were either unknown to most numismatists or rare at the time.

The only 77s with a big premium is the DDR FS801

The FS802 and RPD have a slight bump and the broken arrows can sell quickly when nice
