For MLB records sure... Ruth played against a talent pool equivalent of today’s AA. It’s impossible to compare leagues and generations. You take what you can get.

Well , that IS what is being discussed MLB records. It doesn't matter if they were better or worse back in Ruth's day and there's no point in trying to prove it for the millionth time.
It's also a shame that Gibson didn't get a chance to show what he could do. There aren't even accurate numbers for him anyway.
You end up going with what you have, even if it's flawed.
On Ichiro, I will agree that it LOOKS like he MIGHT have done very well in the MLB had he come over sooner, but to just add the hits to his MLB totals is crazy.

This is amusing. There is NO case of a marginal Negro League player coming to MLB and becoming a superstar. Say the equivalent of today's Tommy LaStella. There are innumerable cases of marginal MLB players being superstars in Japan. There has never been a time in MLB when a group of superstars was suddenly average. Sure, they all tail off as they age, but to say that baseball was improving so rapidly that Ruth's opposition was at today's AA level, you'd have to say that Ruth simply couldn't compete in the late '20s, or Williams in the '50s, or Ripken after 1992. Just didn't happen.

OPS is just one stat. Cal Ripken Jr, as great as he was only had a 112 OPS.

Very true, but I see a difference in a player who is healthy and ready to play, but for some reason isn't allowed, and one who is injured.

I think I'd have to think about puttting Ted Williams and Wade Boggs up there somewhere.
To be the "Hit King" to me, you by default have to have compiled up historical numbers in regards to hits. I don't even consider the old timers like Cobb, because of the difference in eras... a big part of their greatness goes hand in hand with being a forefather of the game and laying the foundation for what greatness is. And while players like Ted Williams, Wade Boggs, Tony Gwynn might be more talented hitters and even better offensive players, I just don't think they played enough games to compile the numbers to be considered Hit King.

Are we talking about MLB records? OP asked who was baseball’s hit king. I can’t see any argument for Pete Rose on this.

OP mentioned all of Ichiros hits, including in Japan, and asked who should be considered the "Hit King".
My vote went to Rose.
Willie Stargell and Mike Schmidt had the same OPS. Does that mean Stargell was as good as Schmidt? Schmidt only had a 267 batting average and is considered by most so called experts the greatest ever 3rd baseman.

Huh? Stargell did not play 3rd base.
Yeah? Really no biggie. Lots of players played both 1st and 3rd.

baseball is full of maybes and should haves...
what if Lefty Grove hadnt gotten a late start...
what if Wade Boggs hadnt gotten a late start...
what if Ken Griffey Jr. hadnt been hurt so much...
What if Koufax hadnt developed arthritis...
what if Joe Wood hadnt thrown out his elbow...
what if Lefty O'Doul had played more than 970 games...
what if Addie Joss hadnt gotten sick...
the list could go on and on and on.
what if Ichiro had gotten to MLB 6 years earlier...
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
OPS is a combination of three stats. While it's true Pete is the "Hit King" he certainly wasn't an "all time" great hitter.
Very true, but I see a difference in a player who is healthy and ready to play, but for some reason isn't allowed, and one who is injured.
Add Killebrew to that list.
healthy and ready to play would have been Lefty Grove, Wade Boggs and Lefty O'Doul who tried pitching for the first 9 years or so of his career.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
Then maybe he would hold the MLB record, but he doesn’t. He holds baseball’s record.

To be the "Hit King" to me, you by default have to have compiled up historical numbers in regards to hits. I don't even consider the old timers like Cobb, because of the difference in eras... a big part of their greatness goes hand in hand with being a forefather of the game and laying the foundation for what greatness is. And while players like Ted Williams, Wade Boggs, Tony Gwynn might be more talented hitters and even better offensive players, I just don't think they played enough games to compile the numbers to be considered Hit King.
nope, Ichiro does not hold baseballs hit record. you also need to add in Petes minor league and post season hits totals. all told, pete had over 4700 professional hits.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
What if Ted Williams didn't have to take time off for WW II and Korea?
Rose gets more fame by not being in the Hall of Fame. How many HOF caliber players get discussed year after year after year? I think the legend of Pete Rose will continue to grow until he (eventually) gets enshrined.
buying O-Pee-Chee (OPC) baseball
Yep. And being the record king doesn't hurt either.

Great to see Lefty O'Doul mentioned! He was a good friend of my great uncle. I grew up hearing stories about him.
And Rod Carew, IMO.
How do Ichiro and Pete compare in their MLB hitting stats from age 27 forward? Not sure how that has impact on the OP's question but would be interesting to know.
Rose loses 799(?) hits.
Pete Rose
AB's 11005 Hits 3357 AVG .305
Ichiro
AB's 9934 Hits 3089 AVG .311
Charlie Hustle was a true ball player. To demolish a catcher during an all star game shows how he got that nickname.
Ichiro couldn’t draw a walk if his life depended on it.
Couldn’t agree more!! I put gambling on baseball a thousand notches below pedophelia

In fact, Mickey Mantle gave Rose the nickname, and it wasn't a compliment.
Did Rose ever play while drunk?

Since this is a “what if” thread, what if Mantle always played sober, and what if he never stepped in that drain and wrecked his knee, and what if he played til he was 50? I bet he’d have 1,000 HRs!! So is he the all time home run champ?!?

Did you know the details on the run-in he had with the chain link fence in Baltimore in 1963? Criminal.
I thought Ford gave it to him.
I looked it up and it was Ford at a spring training game.
I bought this 500 HR club auto locally from a lady that use to hit up all the shows in New York in the 80’s. I just realized along with the eleven guys alive at the time, Pete rose signed it too. Totally ruined it. What a douche bag.
Lol he signed it because it says he was the host.
