Received a vending machine coin in circulation.....1963 Jefferson.....

I'm not sure if I ever got a vend coin in circulation. Buying coin deals over the years, I can't count how many I got in collections. I was given this in my change at the gas station on Saturday. Must have been from a candy machine. Then again, a lot of stuff was a nickel in 1963.

Drop a couple nickels for a refreshing drink.
From time to time I have seen these early '60s nickels with the red paint on them.
Anybody know what the purpose was? Arcade nickels would be my first guess.

A friend of mine had a laundromat and he would paint coins so he knew which ones were used on drop off laundry.

Bar and restaurant owners with a juke box would use red painted coins in the juke box when it wasn't being used to encourage patrons to use it. Sort of like priming the pump. When the juke box owner emptied the machine he would give the red painted coins back to the bar or restaurant owner.

The red paint on the coins was used as credit toward to store owners in case of machine malfunction The profit was split 50/50 with store owners and machine suppliers since most of stores didn't own nor how to maintenance the machines.
I know a guy who owns pinball arcades and he uses quarters painted red as comps to replace coins improperly eaten by pinball and vending machines. When the cash is removed from the machines, the red quarters are separated for reuse and also excluded from receipts reported and deposited. He personally maintains all machines onsite.
e.g. "The pop machine ate my quarter" "OK here you go"
Yep....When diners and soda shops were popular, all the tables had music selection equipment and the establishment had a large juke box.... these painted coins were used as stated above...Cheers, RickO
When JFK was running for president in 1960 some people painted a red skull cap on George Washington on the quarter using finger nail polish and place them in circulation to remind voters that JFK was a Roman Catholic. There was a concern at the time that JFK would be more loyal to the Pope than to America.

I recall diners in the '60s having small jukeboxes at every booth and (sometimes) table.
