1977 D 1 Cent question

YQQYQQ Posts: 3,335 ✭✭✭✭✭

Just found the US cent in a Whiman book.
I noticed that this 1977 D cent has IMO, 2 different 7's.
I am curious if it is PMD, or if this did happen at the mint? (hence it would then be a mint error?)
If you lean toward PMD, how would you explain the different size of the 7, vertically and horizontally.
It appears there is some "damage" at the bottom of the 7.
But again, how was this caused and did it have any effect on the 7.
Thanks for trying to find an answer.

    Interesting.

There does appear to be old coin counter/roller damage.

Below the second 7 there is an odd “smear” of something.

Overall, I get the impression the coin was lacquered, glued, or something.

Smushed 7 likely due to rolling machine. There seems to be traces of its path in the area above the date.

PMD.... the 7, being raised, has been 'crushed' a bit by some external force...No added value. Cheers, RickO

PMD under the 7, and the last 7 seems flattened a bit too.

Ok guys, thank you for your help.
It's not the value, I just happen to notice it and became curious.
But is there an explanation for the last 7 being much thicker in all directions but is shorter?
not trying to start an argument or disagreeing with you.
And I agree it is probably PMD... but not for sure.
looking at the damage, it does look like the rest of the coin. If it is PMD , IMO, it must have happened still at the mint or just after it went into circulation...
    thanks again
If anyone wants the cent, please PMD and include a postage prepaid envelope.... :| lolololo

If you look closely, the 7 isn't shorter. Shadows on the big hit at the bottom only gives that illusion.

It is thicker because it was crushed/smashed down.
