What could cause a coin to look VG, or worse on one side

And VF, or better on the other

...if it is not post mint damage ?

Any examples are welcome.

All sorts of things! One die could be so worn that much of its find detail is missing, the coin could have been saved or mounted so that only one side became worn. One side could be repaired and buffed down to hide it, etc.

    Perhaps used in jewelry.

Former jewelry would be my first guess....that produces wear on the exposed side and protects the covered side. Cheers, RickO
