How about some METAL PORN for FRIDAY?!

Since I posted it just about everywhere else, I guess I should post it here, too >:)

George III gold Guinea 1776 AU55 PCGS, KM604, S-3728. Arguably the most popular date for the type, exhibiting a lovely shade of rose-gold seldom found on gold coins which intensifies very nearly to maroon. A coin with one-of-a-kind eye appeal.

What's the typical purity of a gold nugget that is used to determine value?

@WildIdea... .That gold nugget is really nice...and at 3 ounces, it is really hefty.... Always wanted to find one like that when I was panning.... never did...Cheers, RickO

    Wow Very nice.
I've been throwing some internet Ebay money at some gram pieces when I see them.
I've soaked mine in water for awhile but they dont seem to be growing up very quickly.

Thanks! One of my neighbors does magnified focus stacking photography and if I get a chance I’ll have him shoot it soon. I’d love to see the little textures and waves of gold up close.

It helps when you can get an electric reading off of them. Different pieces will be a little different purity. Even nuggets from the same region will be a few points different.

This is my new 5 Oz getting a few readings just for fun.

Most attractive or interesting nuggets will trade at a premium over spot. Blobs don’t usually command much and can trade at melt or below. Anything over 10% and I personally start to lose interest. Anything goes though and it’s not all about size or purity.

If you have ever been to a major gem and mineral show the ask premiums are pretty high, almost head scratching high, so I don’t usially buy at those although some very cool specimens can be seen at gem shows. I tend to find decent deals or at least a bearable premium from bullion dealers although they won’t usually sell at spot.

Narural crystalline gold specimens trade with a whole others set of rules.

Is there a problem with counterfeit gold nuggets? I can see someone using scrap gold to make large gold nuggets to profit from the collector premium.

Sure, man made nuggets are out there. A few interesting articles written about the tells, such as small tiny bubbles you can see with a loupe. Experience counts but as always one has to be vigilant. A loup will show you intricate textures nature makes. I have a set of looks I like and don’t and I still would have trouble buying from say an eBay auction or something. Always in person examination and buy from a trusted dealer that handles these items regularly.

No kidding why someone would go thru all the trouble to pack those little nuggets (ie flakes) under hu defe of pounds of dirt and rocks is a real head scratcher.
