Carson City dollars, first minted, Feb 4th, 1870
All my numismatic books say that the date of first minting was Feb 11, 1870. Not so says numerous local papers and reporters. In researching my presentation CC dollar, I found references to a date earlier than I expected. Below find references.
The reason for the confusion I determined was when it was reported that Abe Curry, accompanied by a woman, was seen walking down Carson Street carrying $1,100 new silver dollars that were immediately deposited into a bank. Must have been a sight to see them doing that but the day that happened was Feb 11th. So, this probably was the first deposit of the dollars to a bank but a week after they were released to the public.

Here are references which support the Feb 4th date. I have indicated this in prior forum discussions but thought I should condense it into just one researchable thread. Thanks to several forum members, you know who you are, for clues and outright help.
The first is the Carson Daily Appeal of Feb 5th, 1870. Page 3, first column, about halfway down.

The second is Alf Doten's diary of Feb 13, 1870. Page 1078, left column.

Thanks for the information Bob... I enjoy reading anything about the Carson City mint and coins.... Not sure why I am so enamored with the CC products...maybe because I lived in the West for so many years... and enjoyed gold panning, rock hounding and desert/mountain exploration. Cheers, RickO
