Found an old order form for 1971 ike dollars

fishteethfishteeth Posts: 2,267 ✭✭✭✭✭

Cleaning out my coin desk and found this old order form. Must have been in an album or collection I purchased because I was still years away from being born. Seeing the markup. 10 dollars. I guess today's offerings from the mint are priced fairly reasonably

Submit it quickly! They might still fill your order. (Or -- you could buy one for less than $10 on the open market.)

Located this further in. Imagine what coins you could have purchased for 50 dollars in 1972.

I still have the order confirmation card to go with it. This has been a lasting lesson about coin collecting and "investing".

Coins is an excellent way to quickly chew through a pile of money. Nor do you have to wait 48 years!

I know that I bought the Unc. 40% Silver Ike's from the Mint in 1971, probably three blue sets. Cost was either three dollars or three-fiddy per set. Very likely my first direct purchase from the Mint. My Dad bought five proof Silver Ikes (the brown boxed sets) and they were still in his estate 42 years later.

Well, at least they can still be spent.

The 40% silver versions will do better than face.

Yes, worth about $6 each and then take off the fees and such for selling. Still always worth a dollar in commerce.

    “Uncirculated Dollars Ordered”

Sure glad that’s not on any shipments from the Mint.

$3 for the UNC and $10 for the proof.

40% seems odd now, but this was the year after they struck the last 40% half dollar.

The hefty surcharges (esp on the proof) went to the Eisenhower College which is now closed. :/

But, the Ikes were a big deal back then. New dollar-sized coins for circulation and silver versions for collectors.

I wish I would have bought GSA Morgans instead.

I have some of them in my coin cabinet... not sure how many, or what mix of blue/brown... Cheers, RickO
