Who has the California Gold Field Newspaper that....
Says when the CC dollars were first minted. I remember someone here on the forum found a newspaper that indicated the date that the dollars were first minted. I would like to have a copy of that please. I have other references as to the date being Feb 4th, 1870 and was just wondering what this newspaper said. If I remember correctly it was a paper from Grass Valley or nearby.
thanks,
bob

Sorry- Misread the date.
I've seen the article, but recall there was nothing terribly substantial from a numismatic point of view. It did not describe any "specimen" strikes, presentation pieces, distribution of coins, etc.
Thanks all, got what I needed. Just wanted to confirm the exact date they were minted. All previous reference referred to Feb 11, 1870, but that is incorrect. The date was Feb 4, 1870, one week earlier (on a Friday). The date of Feb 11th came from a gold bullion depositor that exchanged her bullion for coins and was walked down the main street of Carson accompanied by Abe Curry to the bank for deposit. This likely is the $1,100 in new silver dollars that were "banked" on the 11th. And this even made the papers as "the first deposit of the new dollars".

Try these two.

More good CC information..... I need to compile this information... It likely already is in a book somewhere... Cheers, RickO

Nice work, StrikeOutXXX !
The Gold Hill Daily News, February 05, 1870 article kind of implies that the Carson mintmark was not locally known until about the time the first coins were made.
