Going over my war nickels and found this 1943d. trying to get a closeup of the hole . It is not smooth has some crumblies inside

    The "crumblies" may be glue. People have been known to glue metal balls or glass eyes on the things as novelties.

    probably just scrapes from the punch, then.

    Edited to add - if they are foil like, I've also seen those from plated ball where some of the plating was left behind when the bb fell out.
