Seated Dollar in Cane from the Civil War

ashelandasheland Posts: 23,190 ✭✭✭✭✭

This sold at a local auction near me. A friend of mine sent me this picture...

It sold north of $1100.
What do you guys think?
(This is the only picture I have)

    That is really neat. :)

That’s cool. I guess it’s the angle of the pic but it looks more like an old “paddle” board. The type that meets butts.

Get whacked with that coin and I bet that would really sting. :D

The date in that "coin" abomination is all wrong.

Not even a Liberty on the shield. Probably not even made to pass as a real coin. Just a decoration.

You guys are dead on, and I told my friend who looked at the piece instantly that it was fake, he later told the auctioneer and they went ahead with the auction, said "may or may not be authentic" Pretty bad if you ask me...

I won't name the auction house here, but it's in Swannanoa, NC if anyone is curious...

Heck, looked at the wood more than the coin. :o

Well, I guess lead/iron is a better butt whipper. :p

    An eclectic mix.

Was looking at the firearms and ammo.

There are coins in there, too.

Unless there was a civil war in China in the last year or so....

This is NOT a coin from the Civil War!

Yes, the shield and the date looked wrong to me right away - thanks for sharing.

We had a country auction place back in OH that routinely had coins in the auctions - some
were actual estate collections, some were dealer junk lots, fake gold coins, etc.

Once there was a crusty, and altered, 1799 cent in the auction. I checked it pretty carefully, and told the
auctioneer (that I knew fairly well), that I believed it was an altered date.
He thanked me, and when that coin came up, he told the audience he was informed that it may not be
    authentic.
That POS still went for $1100.....and that was almost 20 years ago.

The other common thing i see on the seated Chinese fakes is that lady liberty always looks like she has been lifting weights. i wish my forearms were that big!

I got a bunch in my yard with a "Possible Confederate Military Connection". (It's my yard, and some of my ancestors definitely shot at some Confederate military).

I have to defend the "Seated Liberty Dollar" by saying it is a great example of the way one of its kind should look. Cheap. Just like anything else you would buy at a battlefield gift shop. It may have even had a place of honor next to the plastic soldiers, maps, books and coffee cups.

It is such a bad example I do not believe it was ever intended to fool anyone. Wouldn't even doubt if it was marked as a copy on the back. And besides, would our overseas friends who cherish liberty really forget to add the word to the shield? I think not!

The souvenir I can easily forgive. The auction house on the other had.........

I thought you were going to say " a portable unit for gassing coins in slabs," LOL.

Seriously, those portable concentrators sell for several thousand new, if the cane buyer had instead been able to get that for 1100 they would have had a steal ( assuming it works).

Coins, antique furniture, art glass, political and civil war collectibles, native American artifacts, ancient artifacts, sports collectibles, the lists goes on and on. One needs to really know their stuff or find a trusted adviser. No shortcuts.

I see the same thing on genuine U.S. Seated Liberty coins. To my eye Lady Liberty's right arm is way out of proportion on the real deal coins. That's all I see whenever I look at Seated Liberty coins......that....HUGE arm.

That said, I think if that 1862 dollar(?) was taken out of the cane, there is probably a glob of hot glue gun stickum on the reverse. Doesn't look right.

Auctions can be fun. Not just for the things you can buy but for the things you see other people buy and the amounts they pay. If you watch close enough, most basic auctions like this have hints of deception. Don't buy what you don't know.

    Chinese counterfeit. No question.

As a previous poster stated it looked like a paddleboard. Appears the unfortunate buyer took a $1100.00 ouch! A shame the auctioneer accepted the consignment.

There are occasional bargains at auctions... however, most of the 'general merchandise' auctions I have attended are just high priced flea markets....Usually I just review the items and leave before bidding begins....Cheers, RickO

Isn't LIBERTY suppose to be across shield? Many problems. Poor sap got real excited "winning" this one.

Auctioneers need to be licensed, and I would think that licensing bodies would be interested in ethical issues.
