Stuck in airport oblivion... post a cherrypick w/story

yspsalesyspsales Posts: 2,525 ✭✭✭✭✭

Second airline related trip in as many months that went off the rails.

Stuck in Amsterdam airport with no sleep for going on 24 hours... waiting for the last leg to Vienna.

Post a cherrypick and related story so I know this is not some crazy Twighlight Zone skit.

Not as good as some people’s, but the last coin show I was at the dealer had a very rough large cent for 2$ and the flip said 1800s but I thought I could see a liberty cap so I bought it and under further inspection it is a ***4 so I knew then that it was a 1794.

Ah, good old Schiphol airport - I've been stuck there and just left and saw the city and came back when my flight out east was finally ready to go. The risk of flying on E. European airlines - erratic schedules sometimes.

I was communicating through email with John Roberts at ANACS many years ago. At some point we were discussing hard(er) to find Vam Morgan Dollars. He told me about a particular one that he had then recently attributed and challenged me to find it! That in itself would be a fun, yet laboring task. Find the "actual" coin he was referring to? Wow! He gave me some tips to find one raw in the wild and wished me luck. After about 3 years, I found one but it was not his. The one he was referring to was circulated and if memory serves I believe it was graded XF45. I remember not believing that it was "it" the day at the show. I was 2nd, 3rd and 11th guessing myself, but since it wasn't that expensive(a raw common date Morgan) I pulled the trigger. It was the real deal. I sent it in and asked him attribute it for me. In it's original holder from the mid-2000s and still one of my favorites in my collection!

Is it a cherrypick if nobody else knows it exists? My latest is a 1901-O 10c Obverse I. Everything in 1901 is supposed to be Obverse II.

Finally arrived! Maybe dozed for an hour in the last 30 hours. Now all wired up. Going to eat and crash early.

The Austrian Mint has a shop around the corner. Might pick up a 50th Anniversary Austrian Mint Apollo coin. The concierge said she thought they had resumed tours at the mint itself. Will definitely inquire.

In our travels looking at stuff around the city, will look for coin shops. Maybe repatriate a monster Morgan Vam or something similar.

Last time I was in Vienna, I arranged a visit to the Kunsthistorisches Museum and examined their 1794 copper half dollar pattern.
I also bought some Austrian coins at one of the shops.
    Oh, and spaghetti ice cream...

    Have fun!

Not really a cherry pick since I didn't do it intentionally, but I bought a 37-D 3 Leg Buffalo as a Ch. AU coin that later graded MS62 at our hosts. I needed one for my collection so I have no intention to sell, but it was sure nice to get a $1k discount.

Bought a small bag of XF-AU Mercury dimes at a coin show once, when I couldn't find anything else to buy at the show. Didn't want to leave empty handed, after driving 3 hrs. For some reason, I went through the dimes that night, looking for better dates, which is something I rarely, if ever, do. Anyway, I found a nice 25-D in original XF/AU that I sold on eBay...more than covered the cost of the entire bag. Good day.

December 2011, Stopped at a local shop to snoop. Looked at OGP proof sets from 1961 and bought three sets that had frosted half dollars that possibly would warrant a CAM designation. Paid bid for the three sets.

Later that day I looked closer at the coins in the OGP sets and to my surprise I found a 1961 DDR half dollar, the Big One.

Pretty good cherry pick for me that day. Especially since I was not aware of what was in the proof set.

I bought a 1994 Philadelphia Souvenir Mint Set from a local dealer for $4.00. I sold it the next day on eBay for $200.00. I wish I could do that more frequently.

Be careful and check those 1864 No L Indian head cents, so far I have cherry picked 14 as NO L.

Oh yeah... stranded in airports.... In my years of travel, experienced that a few times... Though not a common thing, it is always a bit frustrating....Most of the time, my delays were due to weather... once in a while, the plane had to be serviced or replaced due to an issue....Always had a couple of books with me to read...Cheers, RickO

Does it count as a cherrypick if I didn't know it at the time?

In late 2013 I was still dabbling at assembling a circulated grading set of 1903-S Morgans in PCGS holders. I found a darkish VF30 on eBay, placed a bid $165 (Greysheet VF Bid was $175), and wound up winning.

When it showed up in the mail and I finally paid attention to the mint mark. The darkish toning and the seller's even darker pictures had made me not notice it was actually a Micro-S. Hooray!!

And the more I looked at it in hand, the more it also looked undergraded. So instead of just sending it in for VAM attribution, I had it regraded (submitted in the holder). It came back VF35. Double hooray!!

I was putting together a batch of stuff to consign to Heritage at the time, so the Micro-S went with along. It wound up selling for $618.88 with the juice in August 2014. Here are the Heritage auction photos:

    When in doubt, don't.

Be glad you didn't have food poisoning with that travel day+. Last night in Bacelona I got food poisoning before coming back to the states. About ~38 hrs awake total with 2 flights (barcelona-paris-atlanta) but at least I got these while we were out there. Not picks at all but for 70€ total not bad.

Spent the day looking at art and architecture.

Always hated not being an artist.

Tommorrow will see some Picasso and Monet.

Austrian Mint was disappointing. Just a gift shop.

My greatest pick for memories was a proof set a client had given my wife. My wife just groaned when she got it for a tip.

Sat in drawer for about ten years before realizing it was a 1998 close am penny.

Asked wife about the couple who had tipped her the set... they had passed away.
