OT: First trip to NYC, Rockabilly Rebels, a Hobo! August 2nd Update....24 hours to launch!

Earlier this year I found out that my all time favorite band:

...are releasing their first album in 26 years. To commemorate their 40th anniversary, they are also touring and playing several different US venues. One of them listed is the "Rooftop at Pier 17, New York City". I have never seen them live and have never been to NYC...but that all changes in August. The tickets arrived Friday! I am thinking about staying at an Airbnb(which I have no experience), but am not opposed to staying someplace different if it is more wallet friendly or easily accessible. Ideally, I would like to drive to whatever destination is ultimately decided...park, then take public transportation wherever we decide to go(including the concert in Manhattan) . To save some of the lodging costs. I am looking at vacation rentals in Jersey City, NJ and St George/Staten Island. Big Apple = Big $$$$ for 3 nights! Anyone from or familiar with that area have any suggestions,recommendations, warnings or otherwise?? To keep it someone on coin topic, I found this picture online(it's not mine, but I thought it was appropriate for this thread). Thanks in advance for any replies!

Pier 17 is in the financial district if memory serves me. I highly recommend visiting the 9/11 museum and memorial while your downtown for the show. I don’t have any advice as far as lodging goes. I stay at The Marriott Marquis when I go to NYC, but that’s in Times Square and it’s not very wallet friendly. You should compare prices of the Jersey rentals you spoke of, to the hotels in downtown Manhattan. They may be more affordable because after the markets close, activity really slows down in that area of the city.

@Hallco I was 6 years old when that album came out, and I can say for sure it was the first one I ever owned. I believe I had the tape. So seeing that image is a cool memory for me.

I lived in NYC from 1999-2006. I don't visit or travel there often now, but I do have some recommendations based on what you wrote. I do not recommend Staten Island or New Jersey. It is going to be too tough to get around to where you want to go from there. I have no idea if it's cheaper, but I would check Brooklyn or Queens for an Air BnB. The subway runs 24/7 and with either of those you can get to Manhattan relatively quickly and easily. If you don't want to take the subway ( but I would, just for fun) then you are just over one of the bridges still. Based on where the show will be, you might want to consider Brooklyn first.

If you're planning on going into the city for more than 1 day, figure your tolls/parking into your budget. It'll cost you to just drive into/out of the city and will kill you on parking.

When we go to NYC we stay at the Residence Inn by Marriot Midtown. It's walking distance from Grand Central (we take the Acela train from Boston rather than drive/park) and it's conveniently located. It would not be walking distance for Pier 17, but roughly a 15 min cab/Uber ride. Be mindful of your cost and hassle for getting where you want to go if you stay outside of the city.

You may be able find a decent deal in Garment District, which is where I usually stay (between 23rd and 34th). It has easy subway access. There are several properties like Holiday inn Express, Courtyard Marriot, etc. They have small but nice rooms.

How exciting. I am a Born Native New Yorker and feel jealous of the Roof top concert. Well done. I can give you some guidance from a Native who lived most of her life in that area. I would stay in a local town just outside the city and take the train to the venue. You could pick White plains and get enough cost saving yet have plenty to do in your stay location with concern of any issues. Other towns along the train line go up through Westchester county all the way up to Poughkeepsie which have great historical sites along the Hudson river.

I'm from the area, too and the only way that you are getting from White Plains to lower Manhattan in 10 minutes is a very fast helicopter. It's 30-40 minutes by train from White Plains to midtown (42nd St.) and another 20-30 minutes to get downtown where the concert is.

ONE WEEK!! Thanks for all of the replies! For those who were wondering...I found a place to stay in Brooklyn that is less than 1/2 mile from a subway station! I'm really getting excited. To keep it coin related, post a coin with a cat, one dated from the 50's, relating to New York or anything that makes think about traveling. Horrible picture, but since I am going to see Liberty, I thought it was appropriate!

Ok,I guess no one has any coins representing these areas! Countdown clock starts at midnight! Sleeping will be a challenge with all of the adrenaline and anticipation!
