update: deadline hit, contest thread forthcoming

i rode the fence on whether or not i should tell this story, but it may one day benefit someone on this board, thus i decided to go thru with it.

about 10 days ago i received an email from an online sportsbook. normally, i'd trash such correspondence without even reading the subject title because my main focus nowadays is goofing around on draftkings. but something told me i needed to at least look at what betUS was trying to say to me, so i proceeded to open it.

i was told that i had $500 parked in my account. my first thought? huh? what account? my second thought? mmm hmm. sure i do. can't wait to find out what type of marketing promotion this is and how many times i have to roll it over before i see a cent of it.

well, long story short, after speaking with a couple of reps i did indeed have 500 dollars of live money sitting in an account that i literally have not used in almost 15 years. there was absolutely no bs involved and every cent was mine. when i checked my account info i was showing an address that i haven't lived at in over a decade, so although my recollection of this particular gambling establishment was hazy at best, clearly i had mingled with them before.

how this happened is arguably the biggest mystery of my life. i don't partake of illegal drugs and never have, so unless i was completely trashed at the time (courtesy of alcohol) and made a deposit that i totally forgot about, i have no earthly idea how this happened.

where am i going with this, you may wonder? well, i have decided to pay it forward after this fortuitous stroke of serendipity. but there's one catch. the Toronto Raptors have to dispose of the Philadelphia 76ers first. if they do, i'll be sitting at roughly $750. and if they do, i have decided to hold a contest. a pay-it-forward moment, if you will. but if they don't? forget about everything i just said because it'll be irrelevant due to the fact that every dollar will be eradicated, lol. gooooooo Raps!

after some brainstorming, i came up with a future contest should Toronto move on to the conference finals. surely by now you guys know that my first love is golf. with the PGA Championship looming on the horizon (May 16-19), i have decided to force you guys to pay attention (by virtue of $), even if it's the last thing on earth you want to do.

if the Raptors win, the contest will go down as follows....

if you want to participate, simply say so in the thread that i will create. when the deadline hits, i'll take the name of every person who tossed his/her hat into the ring and literally write his/her name on a piece of paper. into a hat the names will go, and i'll then extract 10 pieces of paper, one by one. the first name chosen will have first crack at a golfer in the field. second goes second, so on and so forth all the way to #10.

how is a winner determined? very easy: the golfer who finishes the highest at the PGA Championship. if there happens to be a tie, i'll split the dinero evenly.

i assume more than 10 will enter, so there's an element of luck involved before the contest even starts. if you're so fortunate, you will then battle against 9 others for the $100 prize. a cool hundy to the victor.

until the Raps-Sixers series ends, i have nothing further to say. lol

sorry, i'll try to simplify. i was notified that i had money in a sportsbook account. sure enough, i did. since it was "free," i got aggressive and put it all on Toronto to win its series against Philadelphia. if that happens, i've then decided to hold a golf contest.

just follow that series and if the Raptors take it down, i'll follow up with details regarding the contest i speak of.

guys this may turn out to be one of the bigger teases of your life. after the first two games of the series i do not like what i'm seeing. i could lay out all the reasons why i dropped a wad on them (and why i'm now concerned), but it's really beside the point and frankly i don't think anyone would care. :p

unfortunately, my gut now says that Philly is going to go home, win both games and the Raps are going to have one leg in the grave down 1-3.

    we shall see.

Well the only reason why I remotely care is because I’m rooting for you to win, other than that I can’t say I ever gave the Toronto Raptors a second thought outside the cool logo 😂. For You though GO RAPTORS 🍺

Kawhi,Lowery & Siakam combined for 76 points then the rest of the team just 13 and IIRC it was just Kawhi & Siakam that did the majority of scoring in game one. Toronto's supporting cast needs start showing up for this series.

I was just checking to see if Toronto won either of their two games in Philly this season and they went 1-1 there. The loss came in a game without Kawhi and the win was after Butler got there but before the Tobias trade. So basically who knows how they'll do once getting there.

i was amazed by the herculean efforts of Leonard & Siakam in G1, but a very small part of me was worried that no one else on the roster showed up. i say very small because i didn't expect that to happen again. Toronto didn't win 58 games and earn the 2 seed because of two guys. but now that we're two games in and there's an APB out for two starters and every guy on the bench, it has become a legit concern.

what are you feeling moving forward? are they going to make adjustments like Philly did in G2 (sticking Embiid on Siakam and Simmons on Leonard to diminish what they did in G1 and force the supporting cast to step up), or do you think it is going to be more of the same?

i'm seriously thinking about hedging my bet. i can grab Philly @ +170 right now, still make it a profitable endeavor (if the initial $500 is considered "free"), and most important of all, the golf contest will still be a go.

i'm gonna sleep on it. meanwhile, Steve is shaking his head profusely somewhere lol

I didn't see the game but judging from the boxscore Toronto's defense played well against everyone but Butler. Offensively Embiid & Simmons had down games,i know it sucks from a Raptors POV because you're at home and want to keep those two in check then you did but you lost anyways. With the games heading to Philly who knows if they'll do it again.
It basically comes down to their 3-9 guys playing better on offense I think. ts a tough call as far your bet which I'm not much help with there.

Toronto won tonight and is up 3-2 in the series. to this point i have held my water, stayed with my original bet and have yet to hedge at any point. if the Raptors win game 6, it's a moot point. if Philly forces a game 7, i will definitely hedge. in other words, it's a win-win situation. i'm going to cash out and the PGA Championship contest is going to happen. thus far the following names have shown interest in playing:

    Coinstartled
    perkdog
    1951WheatiesPremium
    craig44
    stevek
    LarkinCollector
    erikthredd
    BLUEJAYWAY
    thisistheshow

i initially said the contest would be limited to 10 (via a drawing), but i'm thinking about allowing everyone in who would like to participate. unless a lot of unfamiliar faces decide to crash the party, i can't imagine the number getting high enough to where the selections are diluted to the point of being unfair. remember, yes, Tiger Woods did indeed win the Masters this year. but Patrick Reed won in 2018. where in a draft would he have gone? just because you have the 15th pick doesn't mean you have little shot of winning. nothing could be further from the truth.

again, it will go down like this. i'll input every name into a list randomizer at random.org and hit it 27 times (Vlad the Impaler Sr.'s number). i'll take a screen shot of the order and post it. once that happens, the draft process commences. whoever is in the #1 slot can choose any golfer in the field he wishes. then #2 follows suit and can select any remaining golfer. so on and so forth. when the last entrant makes his pick, we'll be set. only thing i ask is that each and every one of you please check in and make your picks in a timely manner so we can move this thing along and get it etched in stone prior to the tournament (first round is on May 16).

how the actual contest will play out couldn't be more simple: the golfer who finishes the highest in the tournament (from the ones drafted) will win the prize........$100. if there happens to be a tie for the best showing (e.g., two golfers share 2nd with the exact same score in the tournament), then the prize will be split evenly.

i think this will be fun and i look forward to it. i was going to be glued regardless, but this will add an extra touch of intrigue. if you're reading this and have yet to toss your hat into the ring, go ahead and do so and in a few days i will create an official contest thread. the deadline to enter is this Friday, May 10, at 8 pm CST.

Galaxy sort of had a free roll with the $500, although technically it wasn't really a free roll because he could have just withdrawn the $500, unless i misconstrued something.

So just a quick guess because i don't know the lines. If he hedges game 7 by betting the Sixers rather than risk losing the entire $500...by utilizing a hedge it doesn't matter which team wins game 7, he would come away with a sure $400 or whatever. Galaxy or anyone can correct me on this if i'm wrong.

Well, five minutes left to play and the game is obviously over.

Sixers win, and Galaxy winds up making an excellent hedge bet. For game 7, it certainly would have cost him much more to do a hedge and bet the Sixers to get to that $555 number.

it had to be done prior to tonight's game; had i waited until Game 7 to make a move, the numbers wouldn't allow it and i would've eroded a portion of the $500 i was "given." obviously i still want Toronto to win, but at least the initial bet will be completely washed out if Philly prevails. (i deposited $100 for the hedge.)

i had an uneasy feeling in my gut after G1 (even when the Raptors won), and it hasn't gone away since. a very quirky, unpredictable series, and anyone who proclaims to know what is going to happen in the deciding G7 is full of it. thank goodness i don't have to worry about it, and thankfully the golf contest is going to take place.

    <<< would've eroded a portion of the $500 >>>

    That's right.

The Sixers are +220 on the money line for game 7. So to protect your $550 original bet, if you would have waited, you would have had to bet $250 on the Sixers.

So instead of a break even or lose $67 situation, you are now in a break even or win $83 situation.

That's if i did the math right...haven't had any coffee yet this morning. :)

My advice would be, whatever the bookie pays you, to take the money and run. But sadly most if not virtually all gamblers don't. Look at the 85k guy who won that Tiger Woods bet. Instead of just banking that nice score and walking away, he's already putting some of it back in action. My educated guess is that he will lose it all back within a year, perhaps sooner. Of course the media probably won't report any of that.

I'll post the new link on the 85K guy on the other thread, so as not to detract from this thread and the chat about the very nice contest that Galaxy is offering.

Well the Raptors win the series, so Galaxy puts some extra money in his pocket.

Even though the hedge bet cost Galaxy some money, it was still a good decision as the series turned out to be close as nails.

As Doyle Brunson once stated (paraphrase) it's not about winning or losing, it's about making the right decisions. And Doyle is absolutely right about that. Make the right decisions and in the long run, the chances are that you come out ahead, in any walk of life.

Now the right decision would be to withdraw the money and permanently close the online gambling account. :)
