A REALLY misplaced mintmark on this 1916-D Buffalo Nickel

I picked this up at the B&M yesterday. Whoever punched this mintmark on the die was was so far off, it's actually into the 'C' in Cents. Not sure if this is a known variety (like the 1975-D misplaced mm Jefferson nickel) but I've never seen one on a Buffalo nickel so far off.

Great find. I have never seen one off that far either.
That is referred to as the "imbedded D." It can be found on other dates, too, most notably on the 1915-D RPM number one, where the secondary "D" is also imbedded in the "C."
acetone will help it
@cmerlo1

On a serious ‘note,’ there is something in-between the combined “C” and “D”.
RPM?
Die scratch/gouge?
Something...?
Looks like a hit on the D and spread out.
Get rid of that green or it will get worse.
Acetone.
Nope-not damage. It's a known MM variation.
Yep- already soaking in it.
Knowledge is power. Thanks koynekwest.
Yer welcome!
That’s neat I’m going to have to look for one like that

May be a known variety, but I have never seen one.

Here's an image of the aforementioned 1915-D RPM 1.
I should pull out my stash of Buffs and check for that anomaly.... Thanks for the pictures... Cheers, RickO
Never saw one of these either.
Looks like we may have a candidate here-
Is that a '16-D?
Great find. It’s always worth another look on fx range low year buffs. I found a few DD in my own stash.
Best place to buy !

Yep-a '16-D. Seems the obv has a little problem, tho-
There's also a 1914-S with the "S" touching the "C', but not that far in.
That's a nice one.
Edited to add: Come to think of it, it might have been the same person who did all three 14. 15 and 16.

There are a few other dates but I don't know what they are.
Pete-
Do you have an image of the '14-S?
Fun stuff!
