Central States Write Up

Haven't bought much the last few months saving up budget for this show both the bourse and the HA sessions. Looking for mostly US type especially type gold but also was really hoping to find the right CBH. Spoiler: I still have that extra budget but it wasn't a bad experience.
Stopped by the HA lot viewing on Tuesday night after work. Shout out to Heritage they really run a great operation at these shows it's just a smooth process all around. I know most of the helpers are just from the temp agency but they all are friendly and helpful as are the full time employees. I had a list of I think 65 coins to take a look at from all the different sessions and probably looked at 65 more as ones in the boxes caught my eye. When it was all said and done I narrowed down my list to about 8-10 coins I really wanted to target mostly in the Friday auctions. The problem was the one I reallllllllly wanted which would use up a good chunk of the budget was one of the later lots so I decided to pass on all the earlier ones (mostly CBHs) and target that one. I did place one bid on a Morgan PR64 that was really all there and beyond but I was a few bids short.
So here was my favorite and apparently a few others favorite as well. Luckily, I thought, there was the exact date coin in 67 with CAC in this auction as well. So I thought, incorrectly, maybe that would take the attention. Wrong, some of you would be glad to know that people do buy the coin still sometimes.
Heritage's images:
Of course their images aren't the best. In hand it's just a monster coin. It went for ~ $8,600 and the CAC example went for less than half at around $3,800 as did a third non-CAC 67 in the auction. I was planning on stretching what I thought was a lot but that was still about $2k higher than I was comfortable with. Congrats to the new owner and consignor on a great result for a great coin. So now I passed on all the CBHs I wanted just to brick on the coin I really wanted, not ideal but that's how it goes in auctions can't control the order they go on the block.
Auction aside had a great time walking the floor on Friday as well even though I didn't buy anything. Stopped by @messydesk to get a few coins imaged and felt like an idiot asking the guys at the table "are any of you messy desk?" and them having no clue what I was talking about but thankfully he heard me in the back lol
Stopped by DLRC first as I had them bring a coin for me. It's a MONSTER $10 lib that has one hairline I was worried about from images and it's definitely a negative in hand as well. Not a total deal breaker though and I still may go for the coin in the future since besides that one hairline it's just perfect but was my first stop so I passed at that time.
After that probably stopped by about 15 tables and added about 8 coins to my watch list but none of them really blew me away. There was a gorgeous 1806 $5 in XF45 that had a rim ding I couldn't get past. That kinda summed up my day, close but not quite there. Maybe I'm getting too picky but I'm looking for long term type examples I don't like upgrading or selling.
Even though I didn't buy anything I had a great time on the floor. My experience with I'd say 90% of the different dealers was great. I'm 33 years old and look 25 and they still gave me time and didn't assume I was wasting theirs. Had some good talks and learned a few things along the way. Also even though I didn't buy anything I added multiple contacts who keep updated online inventory. To the 10% of dealers who can't be bothered to look up and say hello - why do you even set up at shows?
There's still a little hope with the HA Sunday night session as I have a few coins on watch there. Nothing special but cool coins that I'd love to add so maybe I won't be empty handed after all.
Thanks for reading, fire away with any questions.

Sounds like you had or are having a great time! This is the first CS I have missed in probably 30-35 years.
Your selectivity and willingness to walk away without making a purchase is to be commended. This is not a market in which "just OK" is good enough.
@PhilLynott Thanks for the show report. Brought a chuckle in reference to you looking for @messydesk.
Thanks for the report... too bad about the auction... coin is a real beauty....Cheers, RickO
Has the snow started yet? Cook County is under a winter storm watch for tonight.
What is "wanting to brick?"
Brick = miss on. Was saying I passed on coins I would have loved to bid on just to miss out on the one I wanted the most. I honestly thought no one was gonna take the G$1 from me and wow was I wrong.
Considering the date, this might be the lousiest weather I’ve ever seen. Tomorrow is 55 and sunny tho at least
Great report! Thank you.
Sounds like you are doing everything right. And others saw the 1880 as an eight.

It is nice to know that not everyone is blinded by the beans. So if JA saw it, it might get the gold oval?
I’m not gonna pretend to know the difference between a 67 and 68 gold dollar. For all I know it failed at CAC for some reason. I just know the coin spoke for itself like it should and the results supported that. The OGH probably influenced things too.
Glad you found me (or that I heard you).
