I came across two original AU coins raw in an old Whitman folder stored in an attic quite original coins. The issue is they have a musty smell to them 1893-O and 1896-O and I'd like to have them graded. What do you think? Should I give them a wash or light dip?
That is all toning there are no pit marks of any kind.

Put them in a Rubbermaid rectangular container with a slice of apple as it will absorb the funky scent.

This leads me to wonder whether or not you can detect an odor on coins that have been smoked. Perhaps an acrid, tarry smell?

I think I smell something funny too. Is it kind of a musty fishy smell? Can we see the 96 O?

Metal, and especially silver should not have smell itself, but residue on the surfaces may. Might just be me, but I can't tell smell from a picture. But the coin does look to be toned over a cleaning & it may may lose some of the slightly pleasant toning by cleaning. Probably just soap and water with no abrasion but just tamping with a nigh nap clean white towel would get rid of most of the funk and not affect toning as much as even acet0ne.

I wouldn't touch it. No dipping, no rinsing.

Instead, consider a restoration service when you get it graded.

But would restoration hurt the toning? Maybe someone with experience will chime in.

That's what I was thinking and _Now, the odor has dissipated and no more mouth breathing jokes. Choo guy's making fun of my coins?" Chay hello to my little friend _

Any chance for photos of the 96O and a little clearer photos of the 93? :)

I only see one coin - the 93-O and I would grade it AU50.

Not sure if it is the photos or my eyes playing tricks on me. The stars & lettering seem a bit off and the ear fill seems different.

I have smelled coins that had a strong tobacco residue... likely from a heavy smokers collection... really smelled bad... I did not buy them. Cheers, RickO
