Just left the Central States Show.....

I can basically sum up the show in 3 words. A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. i've been attending central states for as long as I can remember, and this years show was IMO by far the lamest show on record. Quite a few empty tables, quite a few currency only tables, quite a few ancient snd foreign tables, and the selection and quality of US stuff was again a big disappointment. I walked the floor for maybe 1.5 hrs and left the show without a single purchase. Walked out of thee show wondering why I still collect coins......a real downer. It also didn't help that 90% of dealers don't even acknowledge you while looking at their stale, overpriced inventory as they're too busy playing on their cell phone.
Your hobby is supposed to be your therapy, not the reason you need it.

It's been said that many Dealers just show up to buy and sell amongst one another. I was busy doing other things and may not even make it there and I live 3 miles away.
Guess I'll go to the currency section and see how those boys did.
Not what I was hoping to read as I planned on making the four hour drive one way tomorrow...
It all depends on what you’re after. I thought the show was decent and bought more than ever before (to be fair that totals 4 coins vs my previous record of 3
). I’ll have a few more details later tonight.
Hey Central States board of directors.
I will never go to one of your shows in Chitcagoland for a variety of reasons.
If I am going to spend money to take a trip, it won't be there. I know the dealers love it because of easy in/easy out.
Flame away Chitcagoland lovers! Of all places, I'd rather go to Detroit!
Before you flame away, I lived north of Chicago for decades. Will never go back.
Sorry for being a bit harsh, but sometimes you have to!

Sorry to hear that. I've never experienced a large show as the one you attended; yet, was pleased to win this for a dear collector friend through online auction, who is 78, and not at all computer literate. I don't think he would have enjoyed show either; yet, for other reasons. He cant get around like he used too!

You mentioned in previous posts your disillusionment with the hobby. If you are asking yourself why you still collect, it may be time for a break. For me, even the worst large show is a good day.
I think their goal is to find a location that every single person approves of so decent chance they'll change it for you if you email them
Well... sorry to hear this... was hoping for a robust show and action packed reports... Maybe next time. Cheers, RickO
I had a GREAT show, and there's still two more days to go!
No love for Chick-ago? It's all about
Florida, Florida, Florida!!!
Cameonut has been bitter today!
What is the story on the $50?

Spent 8 hours there. Pretty decent show in my opinion. Plenty of friendly dealers. Bought 8 coins. Back again today. Like the location much better than the ANA location in Chicago. Easier parking.
Many have run out of money. Show sales slow in this market.
given your review, I am surprised you went back today. Glad you got to see the supernova.
It was kind of a different layout at the CSNS this year, rows 1-12 or so were mostly US coins with a few currency and a VERY few foreign coin dealers thrown in (maybe it has to do with the amount of $ that you are willing to pony up as always). The last several rows were mostly currency and foreign coins along with the obligatory currency/coin supply dealers.
I actually had a very nice time, I made my first whirlwind trip around the bourse in about an hour just looking for the coins that I need and I swear that one out of every three dealers looked at me and asked me "do you have anything to sell?"
I think that dealers are starting to recognize me, I don't know if this is good or bad.
I ended up acquiring two coins, an 1867 PCGS proof 65RB 2 Cent Piece to "finish" off my set, and I also stopped by Andy's table (Angel Dee's, because he always has great 2 centers) to upgrade my 1871 to a 65.
I caught Andy at a bad time a couple of years ago and he went the extra mile to make amends (everyone has a bad day once in a while)
For future reference.
Compared to Dalton... what is the size of the show?

I had fun. Met Charmy, Coinhusker, Notlogical , Julian , and a few others there. Sold a few coins. Made a few contacts. All in a day's work.
If you were there Thursday I will be really upset with you Joe!
CSNS puts every other coin show that you have attended to shame.
I had my pedometer clock me at 3.5 miles and 5 hours just to complete one loop!
I didn't leave with a great feeling either. I showed up a little after noon on Friday, dropped off some coins with GC, roamed around the floor for 4 hours or so. I bought one coin.
Collector, occasional seller
CSNS it not near as big or good as Winter FUN.
I don't think (?) I ever attended the show on Friday but I learned years back that Thursday is the best day to attend, and Saturday is right out.
Friday afternoon just might be the time that the majority of the dealers are moseying out of town.
It was a joke DIMEMAN....JEEEZ!
Coin dealers are a special breed. They'll pay money to travel to a show, stayed in the (overpriced) hotel, and be away from the office for several days. It literally costs of thousands of dollars, and they do it for all the major shows. I asked my coin dealer buddy why he does it. Here is what he said - "I pay $20k a year in travel, and the greatest thing about it is that I get to sit in my booth and play with my cell phone. You have no idea how much satisfaction I get out of playing solitaire while ignoring the public. I'd pay $100k to do it, the experience is really priceless. I won five games in a row this morning and I am on cloud nine! I can always sell coins at home, so why should I make any special effort to do it here?"
I have not confirmed it, but the show is a private show that is owned by the shows promoter. Its all about money now. I have said many times, the CSNS show is on the decline. Many dealers did not go.
Its disgusting they are charging for educational displays-how could the CSNS board allow that?
As for dealers behavior, be glad they stopped putting up curtains and have their backs facing you as they would crack out coins. About the cell thing, many of us have huge internet business so we deal 24/7. Yes, at show we should concentrate on the public-however at this CSNS the public turn out was small!
I personally am sick of travel and going to shows. The wear and tear on me has taken its toll. No BS, I am usually in bed by a half hour after a show closes unless I am suffering through an auction!
The CSNS show is twice the size of Dalton. Most of the major national dealers are at CSNS.
are there any cities you look forward to going to?
