Pretty toning, well struck, good luster and free of significant marks. What's not to like?

    I don't see any rub (though @insider2 might) :#

LOL, As you know (by your post), I'm a rub-a-holic. I regularly grade coins MS-something and add: W/RUB (when it is from friction and not stacking) in my comments for the finalizer.

I see no change of color on the high points of this coin. o:)

Hammered strike, nice toning around the peripheries, and an overall attractive coin.

    Old cleaning?
I have become really sensitive to "cleaned" coins for some reason....maybe it is? Maybe it isn't? :*

Looks cleaned and then purposely retoned.

Looks like a 63 to me. And probably an old ANACS slab. Sweet looker regardless! :sunglasses:

Let's see your pictures! The sellers pictures do seem to indicate an old light cleaning which has retoned….pretty much acceptable these days. There is a lotta light thrown at it so let's see an accurate picture.

    @Realone said:
FYI seller's photo doesn't capture the toning, it is toned more than the photo depicts.

Sorry I'm not able to view the micro-fiche image of TDN's coin. My lamp is burned out... LOL... However all jokes aside, your example is beautiful and in the old ANACS holder IMHO making it even neater!

I wholeheartedly agree with your statement, “But what an honor it is to hold a piece of U.S. history from 1869 and to be able to view it and enjoy its almost original and easy to see surfaces.“ Thank you for your educational posts, too.

That is a very nice seated dollar... good detail... Are the 'scratches' in 'States' on the coin or the slab? Cheers, RickO

Nice coin. I went through a phase where I bought a lot of coins with that look.
Many were in the old Anacs holders.

My tastes have changed and I prefer a more original look, even though there may have been more done to the coin than
has been done to that one.

Overall a very nice coin and I appreciate it for what it is.
    Congratulations on acquiring it.

Okay here goes, FWIW. From your original photo, it looks like a light cleaning years ago (particularly the obverse) and then nicely retoned over time afterwards. That's a guess and I would love to see what Tom Bush or roadrunner thinks for instance. Two folks (among a handful of others here) that know "original" for seated coins a lot better than me.

I like the coin and the toning. I suspect it would be a tough sell to cross to PCGS. Have no idea about NGC.

When Roger doesn't say the holder is 2 grades high you know you did well! :)
That's a beauty! I have yet to get into the seated dollar series due to the cost but will someday, at least to get a nice one for my type set.

I’d agree with a few of the comments here - despite that, a worthwhile coin to own.

    FWIW, I also got a new 1869.

This is a coin that many of us peasants can aspire to own. While TDN's pieces are clearly superior, they are also more like sterile trophies than coins to collect and enjoy. (Both coins are too expensive to have sitting around home - not like 150 years ago.)

My guess is it was blast white from a recent dip when it was slabbed. Has the Anacs colors, which I don’t mind.

Here is TDN's ex piece as an example, with its typical pcgs glamour shot but notice its lightness, and it's an ms66 and absolutely gorgeous.
I am not able to take any photo let alone something comparable to the sellers.

That’s a very nice coin. I find it amusing that two more 1869 SLD threads were started after yours. Reminds me a little bit of Kobe Bryant back when he was playing basketball. If an opponent made a spectacular play Kobe had to be even more spectacular on the next possession.

SO do you come here for the praise.
I come here for the education and open and honest discussion.
I can start a registry set if I was interested in praise. Oh And btw I don't have a registry set.

Threads start out with much praise and as the thread goes on, the second stage is posters who aren't as enthusiastic and then it goes into ...."still a nice coin" or some such.
    Probably just evolution of threads.

It was only an observation of the dwindling superlatives. I think it looks nice. :)
