im trying to learn to grade by photos only- i thought I had it down pat.
clearly not
You ask if it is correctly graded. WHAT DO YOU THINK? You've got four stars here.
My first impression from your post is you disagree with the grade. If so, let's read why so we can all discuss the opinions.
The reverse looks 66 but what is going on in the obverse fields? especially above the eagle. The pictures do not display 66 eye appeal to me. But they are only pictures. It looks like it was holdered last year. After you buy it, don't crack it IMHO.
Not 100% certain if I even own any flying eagle cents so what do I know? MS66? Seems awfully generous to me. Why doesn't it have one of those fancy 3rd party stickers? lol
I’d like to see it in-hand. My impression is that the upper obverse chatter is very overblown by the photo technique, but that’s just a guess. Grading from photos is never foolproof. A savvy photographer can accentuate or totally conceal huge problems.
When you come to think of it, I think the answer to the following is what the OP is looking for:
There are 34 in this grade, none finer (21 by PCGS, 13 by NGC). At this price point of a five figure coin, one would think they’ve all been submitted to CAC, yet only 9 merited a sticker (yes, some of those 34 might be duplicate submissions of the same coin). So the question that the OP might be asking is, why does this coin not merit a CAC? Is it due to the “chatter” above the eagle on the obverse? Or the carbon spots/flecks on each side of the date? Or is the strike a bit weak on the reverse for a 66? I still think it’s a lovely coin.
A day without fine wine and working on your coin collection is like a day without sunshine!!!
To me, most MS-66 Lincolns look overgraded, compared to silver and nickel issues….And I've looked at precious few Mint State Flying Eagles.
I've adjusted my expectations on Lincolns. If high grade FE were my goal, (they're not), I'd have to wait to see a whole lot more to determine if my expectations need to be adjusted.
Red is bad, brown is good.
The coin that joebb21 posted is bad in my book, unless you like a 100+ year old red copper coin that has no business being in a PCGS 66 holder.
I'm surprised that some of the other members did not notice.
Relative to every other MS66 in Heritage Archives I'd have to say that this one gets the brown sticker. The TrueView does paint a slightly more flattering picture.

I did not look at the TrueView, it got a Red or RB 66 designation from PCGS?
Ain't even a 66 in my book at whatever color they grade it at.

They don't designate Red/RB/BN on the copper nickel cents. That includes the early Indians.

I just realized that my comment can be misinterpreted. "Brown sticker" is a joking reference to CAC giving it a "low for the grade" (which they obviously don't do), not a reference to a TPG color designation.

Zoom in to the TV. I don't think HA's photography was that bad for this one.
Seeing this piece does make me feel more comfortable about my purchase of this Flyer which is graded MS-65. I always wonder about these coins. How many marks are too many for the MS-65 grade?
This one came home in a body bag when I sent it PCGS, I think for AT, but it was almost 20 years ago. Needless to say I disagreed but had to knickle under. NGC graded it MS-64. There is a lot of luster on this one.

I bought the 1858 from Stacks' retail when I was in my 30s. It was the last type coin I needed to complete my one cent coin type collection.

Checking CoinFacts there are 25 graded MS66. Most all of them have more eye appeal than this coin. Not much color left. I rather like my 1857 much more........

Pulled the pics from HA.
Since it’s GS here’s the TV:

Anyone can PM me Any Time about Any thing.
Not my series but 66 doesn't seem too egregious to me.
Admittedly at first glance it looks like slight discoloring on the bow on the rev that I cant explain along with that obv chatter.
I'll bet the luster in hand will make you overlook whatever you're seeing in the pics.
Ymmv.

I would certainly crack it out of a 64 holder
You don't find them with blazing luster very often. Still waiting for the OP's opinion.
Not my series but it looks to be a tad generous to me.
Just focus on the label when you bid
Exactly BS!

Let's just wait, I noticed it the first time I looked at the thread,
Can I quote myself?
I can't wait.
What the heck is the color designation!

@BillJones, both are real nice coins, with what looks like strong strikes and high luster. Beautiful! Enjoy!

Looks solid MS65 but Flying Eagles aren't my series.
Luster, Strike, eye appeal. Maybe a few too many ticks but each series is graded different.
A few spots but I am being picky.
I quit grading by 2 dimensional image but I have no real issues.
